Hello Everyone,
As soon as I heard about the new active region, I snuck away from my chores, grabbed up my binoculars, and looked to see what I could see.
The AR is big enough to be very apparent at 12x, even though the seeing was average to below average with a stiff breeze. The leading group of spots were much darker than the trailing area. This is how it appeared to me:

Excellent presentation!
Thanks for posting this - solid thick cloud, heavy showers & gales have prevented me getting a sight of the Sun since Friday.

Brian, Stephen, Walter, Mark--thank you very much. I'm always happy to have a chance to contribute to the record of solar activity posted on this forum. I could hardly believe it that an active region was visible on the Daystar *and* on a rare clear day. It's been cloudy for a solid month here.
I got my chores done in time to catch the Sun again just before it disappeared behind the mountains to my west. The active region had changed subtly, adding a third dim spot of activity in the trailing portion. Meanwhile, the dark leading spots seemed to have moved slightly closer together. Even though the Sun's altitude was lower for this observation, the seeing was a little better. Go figure.

Thanks for a refreshing topic , Michael !
My only experience of solar viewing was through 12x binoculars fitted with Baadar Astro Solar filters , in the spring of 2006 .
There was no activity worthy of special mention taking place at that time , but the experience was so enjoyable that I've been considering returning to it ever since !

Thanks, Kenny. Baader filters for binoculars is cheap and easy. If the Daystar really is waking up again, now is a good time to get prepared. Hope you can get your own look at this active region before it rotates out of sight--it is much bigger now than when I first observed it on the 25th. If you know someone with a H alpha scope, ask for a look through it, too.

It was supposed to be clear today so I took my binoculars to work hoping to get another look at 1029 at lunchtime before it went round the corner. It was still partly cloudy by noon so I had to contend with intermittent high clouds but did get this quick look.
