Tele Vue Nagler
      #3419315 - 10/29/09 10:56 PM

Greetings,

Based on the two scope I have, could someone make a suggestion of "....if I had the same two scopes, and I could only buy one Nagler, I'd choose the __mm."

So far I am looking at either the 5mm, 7mm, 11mm, 13mm. I figured at $259 the price is not that bad if indeed it really enhances the views. I like Planets with the 150mm and the 10" does well on the DSO's.

Any suggestions, including a different size is appreciated.

Thanks guys!

Jimmy

MY first thought is 31mm or 26mm because these are simply superb for deep sky, however you are targeting a different area of the magnification.....

So, my second thought is that if you have a 2X barlow of powermate, the 11mm and 13mm essentially become the 5mm (5.5mm) and 7mm (6.5mm). In this case its pretty much of a toss up, so I will pick the 13mm because this was the first Nagler I got (back in 1990).

Be warned, if you do get 1 Nagler, you WILL want a lot more.

17T4 Nagler is the most versatile for a dob of your aperture/focal length, and has the bigger eye lens over the T6 line which gives the 17T4 more of a widefield "spacewalk" experience than the 13T6, even though both are technically bona fide 82-deg AFOV EPs. You can pick these u for around $300 (sometimes around $275) used, in good condition.

That said, the 13T6 would be my second-place nominee, a very solid choice in its own right.

NOTE: I have the 31T5, 26T5, 17T4, and five consecutive T6s from 13mm through 5mm inclusive. I think the 31T5 is the finest low-power widefield eyepiece in existence. But if I could pick only ONE among the whole bunch, it would be one of the two I nominated above, in the order indicated.

I have the 11MM and while it is a nice eyepiece, the eye relief is a little on the short side. If you get the 5-13 be prepared for short eye relief.

12mm T4 Nagler. Big eye lens and good eye relief.

On the Mak it will give 150x (assuming 1800mm f12) and 1mm exit pupil. Great for planets.

On the Z10 it will give 104x (assuming 1250mm, f4.92) and 2.4mm exit pupil. Great for DSO's. (120x with Paracorr).

I suggest the N 16 T5. Compact with great performance in your scopes.

I personally believe the T4s are the best of the Nagler line so I would get either the 22mm, 17mm or the 12mm. Based on the focal lengths of your scopes the 12mm is probably the best choice for you.

I agree with either the 13T6 or 16T5 as they are small, easy to use, and barlow well. I did not like the 17T4 - not as sharp or contrasty as the 16T5. The 17 was big, clunky, heavy, and has a terrible moving barrel as all type 4's have.

Another thing that is bringing me to the full line of T6 is they're parfocal, with the 16T5 too. It is really nice just slipping them in and not having to refocus except for very minor adjustment.

I'm a T4N fan but have owned all the T6 line and would suggest, if possible, that you do a comparison between the 11 and 13 T6s. Of course, the 12T4 falls right in the middle. If it were me with the two scopes you own, I would go with the 13T6. It can always be barlowed.

I really appreciate the responses. I already know I am out of my class in such a discussion. Far too new to this not to take heed to the voice of experience I find on this site.

Honestly, I don't know T4 from T6 but I am leaning very heavy towards the 13mm T6. I know it will out perform the EP's I currently have in both Scopes.

Up to now, one of my favorite EP's has been the Orion Edge On Planetary 12.5. The fact is it has only gotten me wanting more.

So I bought a Meade Series 5000 Ultra Wide 6.7mm and hoped to see more. There is a huge round dark shaded area that really hampers the views center of EP out to 3/4's of the viewing area. This is one of the reasons I have decided if I am going to buy anymore EP's (which of course I will, I am going to do it right the first time and quit trying to find a "deal" based on an add. It is hard to find an advertizement that does not act like they just broke the code on how to slice bread.

I have read so much here from the guys and the Nagler continues to dominate the discussions.

I recognize there is a good chance that once I get one, well I will probably be hopelessly addicted. I have been warned so I only will have myself to blame.

Warm Regards

JimmyK

Jimmy

If you're looking to save money, I might suggest you look for the older style Naglers on the used market. My 9mm (we call these type 1) is still one of the very best in my eyepiece case. This one get's a lot of use in my 10" dob. I'm frequently seeing these go for $150 - an absolute bargain. The type 6's are going for around $200 used. I just bought a 9mm T6 so I can compare it to my older 9 Nagler. The only reason I picked up the T6 is that it will be parfocal with my 13T6 and 16T5, and a little more convenient to use due to it's smaller size.

Hi Steve,

To be honest I am not too worried about "saving" money. What I don't want to do is "waste" money in a field I know little about. I have taken a sort of "learn by experience" approach and throwing money into blind hope makes for a heavy EP case.

I recognize there are no doubt many good options on the used market. A 13mm T6 is roughly $275 delivered new and I do get to order at the time I choose rather than "have to gab it now".

I appreciate your comments.

Thanks!
JimmyK

Hi Jimmy. On the Meade ultra wide, have you tried adjusting the twist up eye cup to get a better more comfortable view? I've owned the set at one time and they are really good eyepieces.

Hi Dan,

To be honest I have not adjusted the twist up eye cup. I assumed by moving to and from the EP physically that I would see some difference if that is the case. I don't know enough about this stuff to make such an assumption so I will take it back out Sat night and mess with it more.

Thanks!

Good. The twist up eye cup does make a difference for eye placement.

GO FOR IT! I like my 13T6 so much that I kept it even after I got a 13E, and never plan to part with it. I'm a huge fan of the enormously expansive "spacewalk" the Ethos series provides (got a bunch of them too) but...there's many times when the 13T6 simply frames an object for individual study in a more pleasing way...tighter, but still extremely generous by any standard other than the Ethos.

You really can't go wrong with the 13T6. Or for that matter, with the 17T4 or the 12T4, but since your inclinations say go with the 13T6...I'd say by definition you've made the right choice.

BTW: The 16T5 has a rep as one of the more pleasingly sharp among the entire Nagler lineup, and has the max TFOV available in a 1.25" format (the slightly greater TFOV of the 17T4 comes in a 2" format)...BUT BIG CAVEAT: it has the tightest eye relief out of the entire Nagler lineup, which doens't bother some people but is prohibitively tight to many. I wouldn't choose this one without a chance to look through one under the night sky first. It may be the cat's pajamas, or it may be the cat's litter box, depending on your take on this issue.

ENJOY. (And watch out: if you like it, the Naglers are addictive, hard to stop with just one).

Hi Chris,

Thanks and yes I have made my decision and the 13T6 will in fact be my first Nagler. I suspect from all I have read here on Cloudy Nights that I will be quite pleased with the purchase.

I started here in March of 07 and knew nothing whatsoever beyond the fact I wanted to "look up". From reading and asking questions I settled on the Z10" as my first Scope. I realized there were many other options but the Z10 seemed to best suit my bill at the time. It was in fact a good purchase. Easy to use, set up and maintain.

I then added the Mak/Cas but never really got that much use out of it until I changed out the Mount. I knew I did not know enough about the Sky and having a GT makes all the difference in the world to me. Now I am getting to places I once dreamed of but recognize the final piece that needs to be added are better optics via better EP's.

I am thinking a decent Nagler, coupled with the GT Mount driving a fairly decent little Mac/Cas will keep me busy for awhile. It will be a matter of time when new additions will be made I know but I think this will suffice as I learn more about the Sky and make better use of what I already own.

You and everyone here have been great and I appreciate the willingness folks here have to properly advise a new guy, not to mention the patience in so doing.

Thanks all!

JimmyK

You have made a good choice. The 13T6 seems to hit the "sweet spot" for my scope and gives me great views for both planetary viewing and DSO's. I wrestled with the 12T4 vs. 13T6 decision prior to my purchase and went with the T6 due to it's smaller size and lighter weight for use on my Discovery dob. I wear glasses and don't mind removing them to get up closer to the eyepiece but if I fold down the T6's rubber eyecup, I can use the eyepiece with my glasses. Enjoy your 13T6, I certainly am enjoying the heck out of mine!

Jimmy,

I have both the Nagler and the Meade UWA and there is very little if any difference between them. I can see the same in both. I actually like the UWA more, because with the twist up eyecup it is easier to get to a point that eye relief and FOV are both maximized.

Congrats on the new Nagler Jimmy!
You gonna love the 13mm, it's an awesome eyepiece, and it barlows very well as a bonus.

But you've been warned about the devastating addiction...
