Gentleman,

If I may.....I believe the price for the Cave was actually 55,000 Yen. So in that context, it is appropriately priced.

Cheers,

I've always been unable to grasp why some folks think that "invaluable" family heirlooms should be considered to be of special value to anyone not in the family.

It's new in box, so you might want to ask the seller how the rust, scraps, chips, dents, etc occured. Must have been UPS

Looks to me like this is abandoned storage clearance. It's probably been in that shed for years. That yellow stuff is likely oak pollen or something similar that has run in repeated episodes of condensation and dripping (anyone with Atlanta springtime experience will instantly understand). I'll bet the mirror surface is ugly but is probably not damaged. That fluff on it looks like styrofoam chips.

Wait, that 16" is by a real astronomer, finder of Comet Machholz a few years back. I'd say that could be trusted!

Does anyone know what this scope is worth?

My parents live in Medford, OR (I'm in Atlanta, GA) and are willing to go to the auction to bid on the scope. I don't know what it's value is, or what it should bring at auction. Any help would be nice. Getting it for a bargain would be great of course!

Wasn't the auction last week?

I would imagine it would be very difficult to put a dollar figure on a custom-built telescope. You should probably do as much research into the builder and optics supplier and then decide what's the most you'd be willing to spend, before joining in the bidding, I'd think.

Never see a Cave in Florida. That OTA is just too big for that 1.5" mount.

He let it go for $200! I've had it out under Jupiter last night, and it has a couple of issues. Please check out my "Carrion" thread on Cats/Casses for more details. And do offer some suggestions!

A small scope that gets used often is a better investment than a big scope that stays in the closet.

Unitrons, you spend more time looking at them than you do through them.

I believe this scope was recently discussed on this forum as the owner was not sure of the maker.

This OTA looks like a 1st cousin of the 20TE. The Japanese spec sheet is hard to read. Looks to me like 108mm x 1600mm. But the party states 101mm. Has a 25x50mm guide scope which can be used as a high power finder. Even has a threaded CW shaft too. Mike

The auction is this coming weekend. I have been talking to some of our "older club members" and it brought up some stories about "Sig". We seem to remember that this is a Dall-Kirk cass ( about 1 wave system )and that Sig had a lot of trouble with the drive controller. Perhaps that is why it is in a garage instead of an observatory! Mechanicaly fairly well done! This scope has a LOT of potential for a permanent observatory provided one is willing to rework and rebuild it with care. It would not surprise me to see it sell for $20K or more. Ashland OR. is a wealthy community and only 20 miles away. I am planning on going to this auction to perhaps bid on some of the machinery so I will try to follow up on what happens to this scope.

Kevin

If the optics and drive need to be replaced, see if you can get it for a lot less than that! I agree, it *could* be a great telescope.

Cave Cass [Re: mikey cee]
      #3428139 - 11/03/09 08:01 PM

Looks like an 8" Cass, on ebay: Cave 8" Cass

Figures! I am leaving town for Denver on Friday, won't be back until weekend after next, so would not have chance to inspect!

I want something a tad bigger, too.

Anybody know why they'd put rotating rings on a Cass that doesn't have the Newt 2ndary option? To position the finder more comfortably?

How does something like that end up in what looks like a junk yard?
