PLease do not tell me its bad news-Help with LS60
      #3420609 - 10/30/09 05:42 PM

My LS60 B1200 arrived last week but because the terrible weather in the UK I have not had long periods to test it. Today I received my Sol-Searcher (Its great). Today when I tried to use the scope there was a constant thin sheet of cloud in the sky.

Before any of you comment this (which I have seen throughout the forums) I have not forced the tuning dial of it. As I have read so many threads about the LS60 I was very carefully with the tuning.

So to cary on my sad tale. I took it out today and started to use it, halfway through I changed EPs and when I refocussed I noticed what looked like a hair just above the middle of the EP. So after a mass clean of my EPs and optics I slipped it back in and still the "hair" was there. After another clean and check of my optics I gave up finding it and slipped the EP back in. It was only when I started to tune it (When I put the second EP in it was fully tuned to the left) I noticed the "hair" moved upwards and within half a turn it was gone.

Is this normal?

Any advice would be appreciated ,
Thanks in advanced,
Jon

Never heard of a hair like object in ant of the LS60s. I have one as well and have never seen such a thing. The room where the etalons are put together is a fairly clean room.

Thanks for the reply. I think its the etalon and something has been dislodged. As when I further tune it it slowly moves upwards and out of the EP.

Unless anyone else has seen/heard of this before the scope is out of bounds now for safety reasons

Sorry to hear that. Looks like you have 2 broken telescopes in your line-up.

If your 11" SCT somehow breaks, you may be in trouble!

I hope you don't have to ship it overseas for repair...

Can you see any detail on the sun's surface?

If I were you, I would call Lunt and find out what can done. I hope you are able to solve this problem with a minimum amount of grief.

Sir, I can guarantee if you send this back to Lunt, they will replace or fis it. I would like to ask you though, it sounds like a similar issue I saw on one external etalon. There is an ERF located on the front of the etalon inside the scope. Shine a flashlight into the objective to illuminate the area. See if there is indeed a hair or foreign object on the outside of this ERF. If so, then you can simply unscrew the objective and blow it out or gently brush it off. Make sure you remember which way the objective went in. If you don't see anything then it is on the inside of the etalon assembly and any tampering with that will decontact it immediately and render it useless.

Thanks for al the advice. Sorry if I did not make myself clear. It looks like a hair but it moves upwards when I tune the scope. Stephen, I will shine a flashlight to see what is happening and I will post my results and pictures of it here later.

movement when tuning would be consistent with foreign object or scratch on the ERF or etalon surface. They tilt and move the reflection.

You have an LS60T with a tilt mechanism?
When looking thru the scope, turn the tilt wheel all the way to the right or clockwise as you look from the back.

You see a hair like object with the eyepiece in place?
It moves up when you use the tilt wheel?

While pointed at the Sun, remove the eyepiece and see if you see the hair while looking into the scope?

The hair must be close to the focal plane or you would not see it. I am thinking it is a piece of silicone "hair" that has dislodged in shipping.. These hairs are a result of potting the filters and the etalon.
If you can tell me where it is located, I can tell you how to remove it. Worse case, send it back and we will get it repaired ASAP. I'll be in the UK second week of December for a few weeks, depends on your timeframe.

Important thing is that it shows detail. If it does not, it has to come back.

Hi Andy,

Thanks for the reply. I do have the tilt mechanism LS60. I have looked at the optics with a torch and was not able to see any artifacts on any of the components of the scope. But on the collimating lens there appears to be some sort of smudge, I doubt this is the reason though. I will do further tests on it when I get the chance (knowing the UK weather this won't be for a few weeks) and post back; If it is there than I will try to take pictures of it.

Jon
