Collimating Oberwerk BT100s
      #3421163 - 10/30/09 11:39 PM

Well how about that, it really can be done, and not only by binocular wizards like EdZ but by klutzes like me too.

Last night it was all too apparent that my Oberwerk BT100 binocular was out of collimation. It has always been on the edge, but I feared to attempt to collimate it. But something had to be done, so, on the advice of a post from this forum from some time back, I looked for instructions on the Oberwerk site, found them and followed them.

While a number of the screws that needed to be turned were difficult to access and difficult to turn at first, I eventually found that the collimation procedure itself was not difficult and it has made an enormous difference. It's like having a new binocular.

Joad,

Wow! That's very encouraging. Rich V emailed me instructions on how to collimate the Miyauchi Saturn IIIs last year. He said it wasn't very difficult but looked intimating to me. I kept it on file but hope I won't ever need to.

Congratulations!

Hope you are keeping up with your one-handed push ups too.. ;-))

I mentioned it in a post some time back, but will repeat it here. I used an illuminated reticle eyepiece centered on a distant light at night to precisely center the barrel being adjusted with the one not adjusted.

This allows a very good conditional collimation of the BTs and certainly an advantage of being able to use standard 1 1/4 inch format.

Update. I've now had a chance to try out the two Orion 7-21 zooms I got a couple of years ago for my BT100, and which never worked satisfactorily due to merging problems. Having collimated the binocular I now find that the zooms work. I am able to merge images at 85X now.

This turns out to be a very inexpensive way of extending the range of the BT100. Of course the FOV is very narrow, but if I am going for higher magnification that doesn't bother me much. What surprises me is that it doesn't appear to be necessary to have click-stop zooms to merge images. Of course click-stop zooms are much better in every way, but a pair of them can be pricey.

If you are looking for top notch performance, the Orion zooms (these are the cheap ones; Orion has a couple of higher grade zooms now) are not for you, but they are, finally, working out for me as I had hoped when I got them.
