Pentax xw v's Denk 14's ?
      #3421816 - 10/31/09 12:36 PM

Any experience from users of both? I'm a bino user (Just joined the baader MK V club, double WOW!). My IPD is ok for the xw's as I already have the 20mm's.
I have used the Denks and was impressed but I am thinking the XW's may be a bit more wow! ?
any comparisons would be appreciated.

Cheers
Paul

In a recent thread I started, a few folks seemed actually to prefer the 14 Denk over the 14 XW:

Not that I endorse either one yet...I'm still deciding which 14-18mm eyepiece to spring for.

I absolutely love the Pentax XW's but I would have to admit that getting your eye in the correct position to use them is tricky even with the twist up eyecups. That could be a definite issue with a binoviewer where you have get both eyes in the right position.

I've never used the 14 mm Pentax XWs in a binoviewer. But it is my "least" favorite of the XW line (tried mono). I do own the 14 mm Denks and I would compare them favorably with everything else in this focal length. They are really fine eyepieces...

This is a tough call because both are truly excellent eyepieces. I do have a pair of 14XW's I use for binoviewing, and they worked fantastically well. Any issue with field curvature using the XW14 I think becomes irrelavent when binoviewing with a Newt at least, and having to use an OCA to get focus. The OCA will flatten the field and any criticism of the XW14 is mute in this configuration. I personally don't have any trouble focussing or merging with the XW14 pairs and they have beccome my favourite BV eyepiece pairs. In cyclops mode, sometimes I use a Paracorr when using a fast, short focus newt with the XW14, but I find I usually don't bother.

But having said that, the Denk 14's are very good too, so it really is a tough decision. Maybe one of the real advantages of the Denks is their compact size, and the fact others using your scope with different IPD's may be accomodated more easily than with the XW's.

Oh, and almost forgot..if like me you already had a single XW14, then you just buy another one!

Optically, I saw no difference between. But for binoviewing, I'm kinda lean to the D14 thanks to its light weight. Also, Pentax does have edge on the overall build quality.

I have just submitted a review here on CN comparing 14mm Denkmeier, 14mm Pentax XW, 13mm Nagler T6 and 13mm Ethos eyepieces.

Hopefully this will be uploaded soon by CN staff and should assist answering any queries on the 14mm Denkmeier in relation to these other premium widefield eyepieces.
