Veil Nebula, unmodified 40D new
      #3411074 - 10/25/09 11:45 PM Attachment (82 downloads)

My first attempt at NGC6992 Veil Nebula. Taken with an LX200 10" Classic, 6.3 focal reducer, an unmodded Canon 40D and an Astronomik CLS filter.

This was 16x150seconds, with 12 darks and 12 flats. No autoguider was used. Taken in an area of considerable light pollution. Next time I shoot this object I will go with triple the light frames.

Processed using DSS and PSCS3

Comments/advise are very welcome

An interesting start. I can appreciate the no autoguiding aspect of it and the good result considering the focal length used. There's some gradients happening and of course noise, perhaps some horizontal banding from what I can see. And the green and blue channels are clipped. I'd be interested in seeing the next evolution of this with more subs added to level things out and reduce noise.

Good work!

Cheers.

This is a big target but I like the section of it shown here and you have brought out a good amount of detail.

I think I could improve by trying to limit my evening targets to just one...I get in a hurry and try to shoot too many targets in one evening, instead of concentrating on one specific target.

In addition, Next time I will shoot about 40 frames instead of just 16 of this nebula.

Thanks Daug,

That is quite a nice image for an unmodified camera. Usually the stars predominate the image, but here, the nebula stands out well. The CLS filter does tend to alter the color a bit, and that is why the color is not as you tend to see it in pictures.

The best images that I have seen of the Veil, whether the east or west branch, are done using narrow band filters to pick out and accentuate the blue and red emissions. The nebula shines in H-alpha, S-II and O-III, so all of those filters help; and, like the CLS filter, they will kill the urban skyglow.

Keep up the good work.

Dan - I know all about wanting to shoot everything! It's hard to stay on just one target for sure! Again, great image, very impressive for unmodded and unguided.

Cheers!

Thanks Eric,

Looking back in retrospect, I should have just concentrated on this object for the evening, and took 2 or 3 times more light frames of it, instead of going after M1 too...I always get too eager and want to shoot multiple objects...

Just guessing but considering this was a stack of 16x2.5 minute exposures, that's probably the reason for less stars.

Thanks for the information on the filter Rob!

Man, I have that problem each and every time - takes loads of discipline and self-control...

Thanks, but as I said earlier, I regret sharing this with other objects that evening, and should have just shot more subs of the Veil.

Thanks Sal...BTW, you do great work, and I just saw your gallery...*Very nice*.
