Stars Rising Behind the Trees - Time Lapse new
      #3418655 - 10/29/09 04:54 PM

Hi all

On top of one of the hills facing South East at Lostock Scout Camp, there’s a row of 5 trees that really stand out. I always wanted to make them more of a focus of something photographic. I used them in my Raining Stars at Lostock image from IISAC2008, but it was a much wider field.

On Friday night, 16th October at IISAC2009, I wanted to try again with a longer focal length. I setup my Canon 20D and 24-105mm L lens on a tripod, and programmed it to take 30 seconds exposures on repeat.

I combined the result into a movie – showing both timelapse and star trails. There’s also a single star trails image with all of the frames combined.

Attached is a smaller version of the still image - Click the image for a larger version.

And to read about how it was all done, check out my site at:

Thanks for looking. Comments and feedback welcome.

Cheers

It is cool to see the southern hemisphere stars rising the "wrong way"! A rare treat for me having spent my entire existence north of the equator.

Nice! You should consider getting it into The World at Night (TWAN).

One of the best star trail photos i've seen! I like the horizontal branch hanging out on the 2nd tree from right.

Mike,

That is a really nice star trail image. I agree that context, such as the trees, adds a lot to images such as this.

I have always wanted to know what the stars are in a star trail picture such as yours. I have recently installed the astrometry.net code on my computer and set to find out the stars in your picture.

It might have been faster to inspect the beginning of your video, when the star trails were very short, but often you don't have that resource, so I used only the finished star trail image.

The abbreviated work flow can be seen on my site.
