Case for your CPC 800? new
      #3369094 - 10/03/09 05:59 PM

I just got my CPC800 yesterday. I can see now that I need to get some sort of case to protect it when I travel to other locations and at home.

I would like to know what case do you use for your CPC800?

I have a JMI case for my 11" CPC.

http://www.jmitelescopes.com/buy_cases.htm

They are pricy but I think well worth the cost when you think of what you are protecting.

I have an 1100, but the choices are pretty much the same. For commercial cases, I am only aware of two options: either the hard JMI case or the soft case from Cases and Covers http://www.casesandcovers.com/

I have the soft case, and it is perfect for my purposes - transporting the scope in the trunk of my SUV. There are two handles that are well attached to the side of the case - not the easiest to carry but manageable for short distances into the car and out. The front of the case has a small pocket, which is useful for cables etc, but you'll need something separate for the tripod, eyepiece case etc.

The JMI case is more expensive, but has a hard cover and wheels for easier transportation. It is larger and more expensive that the soft case.

You can also find posts of these forums from folks who make their own cases out of various materials.

Good luck!

Paul

I have the JMI and it is great protection, however the foam on the inside keeps coming unglued.

Like Paul and Jeff said, the two commercial designs are JMI hard case and the Cases & Covers soft case.

Kinda depends on your budget, though. I would think with a little searching, or someone's kind guidance on this thread, you could probably find a storage tub/container that with a little foam packing would suit your needs.

I like my Cases & Covers soft case just fine. But I have to pack into a covertible, so weight and bulk are the primary component of my secondary consideration vs. protection.

Here's what I use to transport my CPC 800 - a wheeled Rubbermaid container. Fits it like a glove!

I wrap the scope in a moving blanket when transporting it, and store the tripod in the case at home. The handle opposite the wheels makes it very easy to move, even over grass.

The best part? It was only $20 at the local home improvement store!

Anyone seen this one?

Pelican Case

It's a Pelican case the same price as the JMI.
Anyone have any experience with this one?

I have a Pelican case for all of my EP’s and accessories.

Pelican makes some of the best cases around and that is a good price too.

For my 8" LX90 I use a plastic storage bin padded with a blanket. I can also fit charts, dew shield and ep's in the same case. 2 trips out the door total with everything, unless I add a chair...

For my CPC11 I use the Pacific Designs soft case. Works fine for low-impact transport and for keeping dust out of the OTA (my cpc has vents and fans).

I have one of the big Pelican cases- much sturdier than anything else around. The case is waterproof, and has nice rectangular sides so you can set something on it.

I spoke to a company that that sells Pelican cases and offered (at a price) to make a custom insert for the CPC800

IF I can get the dimensions.

I emailed Celestron and requested dimensioned drawings.

We shall see!

If getting a drawing turns out to be a problem, see if they can't work from the foam insert in its original shipping container.

Rich,

You where right!
Celestron just emailed me a rejection for the drawings.
So, I asked if they make a case for the CPC800.
Let's see if I get a response.

Well, I got the Pelican 1660 and the tripod soft case from Cases and Covers. Really like the Pelican 1660 case took me 2 hours to "pick & pluck" but it came out great! Room for the SCT, finder scope, and controller.
