Ham.....I'd take and dab the entire area with vaseline. Then lay it face down on clean card board and spray away. When the paint dries simply wipe the vaseline off along with any overspray or leakage of paint underneath. Or spray it right side up.Mike

Hi folks.. I finally got around to taking a couple of pictures now that I am all done. The only thing I would like to do yet is paint the actual objective holder, but I can't think of a way to keep the white writing that shows the objective size and focal length which is in white..How would one go about making a dew shield instead of painting? Outside of that all seems to be well with the scope.

Painting recessed lettering is very easy if you use good quality smooth black paint as the base and let it dry a long time - use white Latex applied with a damp cloth - it goes right into the lettering and you just wipe off the excess.

It's a pretty little scope, very Japanese looking, like an early Tak or Vixen.

The dew shield can be made from a length of aluminum tubing with self-adhesive felt bumpers of sufficient thickness to grab the outer rim of the objective cell. Check with Hastings to start.

Hi Ham Radio,

Your 80mm looks fantastic! As for painting the objective cell without covering the white lens specs lettering, you could apply Painter's Tape over the entire flat surface where the lens specs are locate, then trimming the access with a sharp utensil. Doe the surface with the specs need painting as well? If parts of this surface needs painting, you could just mask the objective specs and any other surface area with the painter's tape before painting; this includes the threads. Please post a photo of the lens cell so I/ we can make a better determination.

As for a dew shield, you can use a section of PVC or aluminum tubing. Was the original dew shield of the screw-on, slide-on type?

The only reason I was thinking of painting it is the fact that the gray color is slightly darker than the rest of the gray paint. I am beginning to think maybe a dew shield might be a better way to go. It didn't have one when I got it. It would be a slide on type.

Following advice on this thread I sent My Towa model 339 lens cell and damaged lens to Sheldon for replacement. If the Carton lens lives up to its reputaion, I'll have a fine 80mm f/15.

I understand, Ham Radio. A dew shield is a must. Just make certain to flock it well with flocking material (such as adhesive felt, or Protostar flocking paper), or with flat black enamel.

Sent my Towa 80mm cell to Sheldon to have him install a Carton lens. I'll post results once I test it.
Cheers, Bill

It will, trust me.

I recently changed out my Towa 60mm f/11.7 lens for a Carton equivalent (supplied by Sheldon), and find a subtle but noticeable improvement in the view. Stars are more pinpoint, and the background seems darker.

I want to thank everyone who has helped me out with this scope. I have just acquired a Tasco 15TE and the CFO of the household says something will have to go. If anyone is interested in this scope please get with me. I am only looking to get back what I have into the scope.

Installed the lens on my Tasco tube as I'm refurbishing the Towa tube. All I can say is the Carton lens is impressive. Great color control, contrast, and sharpness. It's exceeded my expectations and I plan to get many years of enjoyment using it. I think it on par and maybe better than the outstanding Polarex 76mm that I own. I'm looking forward to doing a comparo. Thanks for the advice to buy this lens.

Congrats, Bill! As I continue to read the merits of the Carton objective, everyone's comments makes me want to build one myself. I look forward to reading your comparison on your Carton versus the Polarex.

Well, Just sent my Tasco lens and cell to Sheldon for replacement. The Tasco lens is ok but not in the same class of the Carton lens he recently sent me. This could be for several reasons and I've asked Sheldon to comment on it. 1) Could be assembled improperly 2)Might need foil spacers. 3) might not be original which is probably impossible to say.
Anyway once I'm done with this project I'll have two 80mm/F15's that optically will likely stand up to any comparo of similar Achro's. If they perform the same I'll toss a coin and offer one of them for sale at a good price.
Cheers, Bill

Hey Bill,

Have you had the opportunity to compare the Tasco and Carton objectives?

Yes I have compared them and the Carton is way superior in contrast, sharpness and dark field when viewing Jupiter. Very noticable difference. So I'm replacing the Tasco lens with another Carton. However, it's possible that the Tasco lens could be tweeked into better performance. Also it's possible the lens in the Tasco is not original. Based on many reports I've read the Tasco and Towa lenses can be excellent.
I've asked Sheldon to help me evaluate the Tasco lens, hey maybe all it needs is spacers. We'll see.
