Observatory on a garage. new
      #3421230 - 10/31/09 12:22 AM

Also thinking of putting an observatory ontop of my garage. The only problem I am thinking about is how to connect the pier so not to get vibration fron the floor. I was thinking that the pier would have to be on a heavy beam/ MICROLAM/PARALAM. but how to stablize it. any ideas. all would be greatly appreciated

Welcome to the obs forum. My observatory was built into one of the bays in my garage by Scott Horstman of Backyard Observatories. I've been very happy with it and it was the best move I've made in this hobby. Follow this link to some photos of the build. You'll also find a link to the entire Cloudy Nights thread that takes the process from start to completion here. Woodlawn Lake Observatory Cloudy Nights Thread

That looks great, something like that would be awesome. Since I'm a contractor the build is no problem. I noticed that you put a pier in there. I still need access to the garage. That why I was planning on spanning the width of the garage with some type of beam just for the scope. I'll have to draw a sketch of what I'm looking to do.
Thanks

Hi, and welcome to Cloudy Nights,

If your a contractor, why not build a addition to your garage then you could have full access to your garage,

Dont have the room Directly behind it is the Koi pond and right behind that is the gazebo. Plus if I go up I get a little more clearence above the 100'+ oak tress in the back. I just might have to take some images to show the layout.
My house is the third one in from Sheryl Dr on Oxford RD. On the south side.

Bruce.....I've handled Microlams for years. The only problem with mounting a scope on them is the vibrations. These puppies go "boy-oing" like spring steel. Can't get a pier to the garage floor? Not a double car job? Give us a picture. Mike

You might be able to build a box beam steel "arch" that spans the width of your garage and weld a plate to the top/center to mount a steel pier on. It would need to be isolated from the floor/walls of the observatory and securely lagged to the floor. Thick neoprene rubber at the base of the plates that attach to the garage floor would help to dampen vibration as would filling the "arch" structure with sand. Nothing reduces vibrations like mass. I'm in the middle of something right now but I could probably sketch something up.
