24mm Panoptic to replace 35mm and 22mm Panoptic
      #3423615 - 11/01/09 11:41 AM

Hi, I currently own a 35mm and 22mm Panoptic, and was thinking of replacing them both with a good used 24mm Panoptic. Reasons: I'm trying to save up money for a heavier mount for my Mewlon 250 (it's currently on a Sphinx SXW); and the 24mm Panoptic is so light the balance would stay essentially the same with it as with my Jena 16-O, 14mm Radian and Jena 10-O eyepieces.

Thanks,

Chuck

If you really want to save cash:

Meade Series 5000 Super Wide 24mm - $169
Baader Hyperion 24mm - $119
Meade Series 5000 Super Wide 28mm - $179
I have seen remarks on this site by several people who actually prefer the Meade 24 to the Pan. I certainly consider my 21 Hyperion to be equal to my Pans in everyway. I don't know it the 24 is in the same league as the 21 though.

I guess if money was the primary object, I would go with a 32m TV Plossl. I used to have one and it's a lovely eyepiece with about the same FOV as the 24mm Pan, of course with less magnification.

I thought money was the primary object here. But anyway I know how much I use my 35 pan and my 22 nagler. They work very well as a team and I would hate to have to give one of them up. I usually keep a narroband filter on the 40mm Pentax all the time and an OIII on the 27mm Pan all the time. So the 35 and 22 are my go to eyepieces for non-nebula objects.

Optically i see only loss. A pan 24 cannot replace both a pan 22 and a 35mm IMO.

Actually i would keep both eyepieces and just save a little bit longer for the mount.

Sell the 22MM and 35 MM Panoptic and get yourself a 21MM Hyperion and the 36 MM Hyperion Aspheric on your Mewlon which I think is an F10 scope you will not notice any difference between the Pans and these 2 eyepieces. Even buying both new the cost is $318 (about what a 35MM Pan costs)

I think you're right on about getting a beefier mount for that scope of yours. Wow. It deserves the very best.
The Panoptic 24 is a stunning performer (at least in my two scopes) that also happens to be pretty darn light (weighs only about as much as a Radian). I think it's the bestest little widefield. If you are trying to wring the most performance and FOV out of the smallest package possible while you wait for a sturdier mount, then it may just be your best choice.

Thanks Pete, that's what I was thinking. Here's a picture of my Mewlon 250 on a Sphinx, poor little thing ...

Chuck

I actually just traded a 24 pan for a 22 pan. I also currently own the 35 as well. Honestly, the 22 and 24 pan are almost the same eyepieces in terms of the view that they provide in the field. The main difference is obviously is the duel barrel and weight on the 22. I find this focal length to be critical in my 12 and 8 inch dos. My main reason for trading the 24 for the 22 is that the paracorr settings are the same for the 35 and 22 pans.

With all of that being said, the 22 (formally 24) is my low power work horse except for a half dozen or so of the largest DSO's. However, I would not really want to give up my 35 because the 22 or 24 gives me only slightly less than 1 degree TFoV. When I am having problems finding something in the 12, I don't hesitate to put in the 35, which gives me over 1.3 degree TFoV.

So here's my recommendation; If you're seriously considering loosing the 35, try leaving it inside next time you observe and see how you manage without it. I will say that I don't observe much with the 35 because at f/5 the field is really bright. But I don't mind keeping it because I got it at a discount due to the condition that I bought mine in.

I wouldnt trade my 35 or 22 let alone both for a 24 Panoptic. I find the 22 is much nicer then the 24.

While I agree I like the 22Pan more than the 24, after a side by side for a couple of months; the 24Pan is also an excellent eyepiece. However, for me anyway; I would feel something was definitely lacking if I traded the 22 & 35 for the 24. Again, for me; it cannot replace both.

You guys are right, I'll keep my two Panoptics. I had my 35mm Panoptic out tonight and can't see selling it, especially with the 3000mm focal length of my Mewlon. I'll just save up and hope to fall into a Parallax HD 150 at a yard sale ...

Chuck, glad to hear it; I'm sure you would regret selling them later on. Also it might be good to hang onto the 22Pan, as they have been discontinued; so won't be easily replaced, later on!

Hi John, I spent the evening with the 35mm Pan in my Mewlon 250. I'm going to keep the 35mm and 22mm Pan. for the rest of my set I have a CZJ 16-O, 14mm Radian, 12mm AP SPL, and CZJ 10-O. I just need one of those nice Zeiss 2x Barlows ... I plan to replace the 14mm Radian and 12mm AP SPL with either a CZJ 12.5mm or a CZJ 25mm plus the Zeiss 2x barlow
Thanks,

Chuck

Instead of a Parallax 150, get a Celestron CGEM. You won't have to save near as much money. As a matter of fact, if you sell the Sphinx you'll have almost enough for the CGEM...
