Are you suggesting that you paid much less for your Zambuto 16" mirror (the one you have listed in your signature)?

I paid $1000.00 for my 10" f-6 direct from Carl in 2005, $300 less then current price. I think the rise in glass prices have added some cost to his operation.

After looking at those mirror prices I can see why the Starmaster and Webster scope prices are so high. In fact when I take away the price of the mirror I don't believe I could possibly build any of those scopes as cheaply as they are able to build them. Just pricing the remainder of the materials almost matches their fully constructed price. Now I am trying to figure how they even make a profit unless they are able to buy these Mirrors at a cut rate price.
I also notice Zambuto has no secondaries on the site, they don't make their own secondaries?

webster has admitted in the past that if they did not already own a shop full of CNC equipment, they would not be able to make a penny in the scope biz.

If I remember correctly, Z does have the means for testing secondaries so offering them may be down the road. Antares and Protostar are very reliable for quality. I've never got a bad piece from either. Z does recommend Protostar on his mirror groups web site.

$1300 does seem high for a 10" f/5 mirror, especially considering one can be had from R. F. Royce or OWL for $400-500 less. Carl also states on the site that he is still using Pyrex. What am I missing here?

He obviously stocked up.
I must say though, only $8700 for a 24" isn't bad at all. I'm surprised, I thought it would be alot higher than that.

I do like that "Eye in the Galactic Core" image on the front page. Wish I'd have thought of it first to go with "Sauron's Other Eye".

Comparing the Royce and Zambuto price lists, they aren't really that far apart overall. I paid a little more for my 16" Royce conical mirror than Carl charges for his 16".
Too high, some say? I've yet to hear of anyone with buyers remorse over either a Zambuto or Royce mirror. Maybe they're out there, but they aren't whining to me.

Nope, and I'm not whining either- I bought a mirror from Royce. However, for the 10" size, Carl's prices seem unusually high.

If you consider the people that are a the top of their craft, Astrophysics and Zambuto certainty come to mind. People wouldn't be buying either if they all thought the prices were to high. yet both have waiting lists. There will always be people who want the best and are willing to pay for it. Now is this for everyone, certainly not. these two companies are certainly out of reach for the masses. Premium optics are not really needed to enjoy the hobby and the seeing in most areas negate their advantage on many nights. I'm glad my main scope has a Zambuto mirror but in this economy, I would probably go with Royce or Dick Wessling if I were building a scope now.
