Old orange tube vs 8SE
      #3424666 - 11/01/09 10:27 PM Attachment (18 downloads)

I decided to do a direct comparison of my orange tube C8 and my NexStar 8SE. Since the moon is dominating the sky being just past full that was the target for the comparison. The waning limb of the moon was showing some longer shadows and that provided a decent comparison as far as the sharpness of the two scopes.I used a 15mm RKE in each scope and both are carefully collimated. Seeing was pretty good and the moon was nearly overhead. The scope are rather close with the SE having little better contrast and maybe a tad sharper.

I don't know. A nameplate on the drive base reads Celestron Pacific but the mount is not one of the sand cast versions. The secondary holder is machined aluminum and has a center screw plus the three collimation screws instead of the three screw design they seem to have used for a long time.It has a label that reads Celestron Special Coatings on the tube and the corrector has the pale blue tint of a single layer coating. Anyway I'm thinking late 70s or early 80s. Odly it has a place on the nameplate of the mount for a serial number but its blank and there are no serial numbers on the tube or anywhere that I can find.
