Hi Patrick

I am impressed that you can get the 13.1mag star near M57 so often, as I only get it occasionally. I have seen it several times in my 63mm Zeiss, so I know it's definitely possible, but it is quite difficult for me.

Oddly, I can go more than a half mag deeper on other objects, but maybe the star teases me because it is so close to the bright ring nebula. Faint objects get drastically more difficult when they are close to objects even just a little brighter than them.

If you find that star so easy, you should be able to go considerably deeper still when the object is far from something bright.

I'd suggest you try seeing Minkowski 1-64, a faint planetary nebula in the middle of Lyra, not very far from M57 and identical in shape, but much fainter. I have seen it once in the Telemator at 84x. It was invisible at 53x, so you may want to remember that if you go for it.

Clear skies!

Hi Thomas,

Thanks for the possible object in Lyra. I've heard that PN to be quite a challenge with smaller apertures. My 19mm Erfle should give me 53x with the 60/1000mm. Even though I've been at this on and off for over 10 years now I still feel like a beginner when it comes to hunting new faint objects. That said M33 and NGC 604 are easy objects for me in the 60mm so it is time I seek out more difficult targets.

Indeed! Now, remember, for very difficult targets like Minkowski 1-64, a very highly detailed map is essential. I use, as I have told before, prints of images from Digitized Sky Survey. It is the best I have ever used.

Another highly interesting Minkowski object visible right now in small scopes is 1-92, the Footprint Nebula in Cygnus. It is very small, but has high surface brightness and can take heaps of power. It lies very close to Albireo, but again, you need an exceedingly accurate map to find it. Forget U2000.0 or the like, images are much better.

So Thomas, do you still use your Amici correct image prism for your diagonal when hunting new/faint DSOs?

But of course! It has spoiled me completely and I can't stand use anything else anymore.

Get one yourself and see for yourself just how much easier it gets. Quality amici prisms are a bit expensive, but they're worth it, when it comes to starhopping.
