Anybody out there try recording video from their Canon EOS 450D/XSi using one of several freeware applications available? I'm thinking about trying it for 30fps planetary imaging.

I've done it with the 1000D/XS.
Should be exactly the same as the 450D.
See:

It works remarkably well for planetary imaging with a DSLR.

Very nice! I think I'll try to get the most out of my XSi before I consider buying a dedicated planet cam.
I wonder why Canon doesn't provide this functionality?

I think that if mastered, live view planetary imaging could give dedicated planet cams a run for the money.

Sal-
How do you like your ATRC8? I've been thinking about hanging up my SCT for one. My only trepidation is that I use the SCT primarily for visual observing and I worry that the large central obstruction (47%?) in the ATRC8 will spoil that a little.

Hey Brian, I love my AtRc8 its a great scope. the optics are great. i dont think for 1400 you could do any better. i dont need a field flattener with mine. when collimated properly i get round stars to the edge of the field. im not sure about the visual performance. i have been too lazy to throw a diagonal in and use it visually. i have used a 20" rc before visually and it looks great. but i dont know how an 8" would be. ive heard they lack the contrast of scopes with smaller central obstructions.

Do I need any special cables/hardware, or can I run it out of the standard mini-USB port?

What software is used to separate and stack the images?
