Stretch and preserve stars? new
      #3421951 - 10/31/09 01:50 PM

Ok, so I have been at this for a few years now and feel I am getting pretty good at processing, but one thing that still gives me a hard time is keeping my stars tame while stretching the image. It tends to blow the stars out something fierce and I was wondering if I could get some input on how others go about this, and preserving the stars and star color. I have tried selection masks, layer masks, they always end up with these ugly halos around them or still getting blown out.

Thanks

Hi David,
The solution is to construct a mask for stars, it is easy, it extracts the luminance image (BW) and invert it, it applies the mask on the image and to process happily

I'm not sure what software you're using to stack but DSS will generate a star mask for you during the stacking process. You then bring that into PS along with your image. Haven't tried the other method - perhaps it's better.

Also, if you guys got the latest carboni tools, the action select brighter stars creates a star channel that can be saved as a layer.

Bob, do you or anyone else have any instructions on using this?
