Orions new Full Frame sensor camera...
      #3426774 - 11/03/09 02:18 AM

Looks like Orion is really going for the astro-imaging market. A full frame sensor camera in color and monochrome for under $2,900.00...not bad.

You'll find it here--> Parsec 8300c and the 8300m

N/P you really had me hopping on that link with CC ready but if I spent that much my wife wouldn't be too happy.

I dont understand how Orion will be able to compete with their 8300 cameras. SBIG is selling the same chips in their new ST-8300 for only $2000 new! Nearly $800 cheaper then Orion for the same chip and its an SBIG.

I'm sorry, but when did 22mm diagonal sensors became "Full Frame", my DSLR APS-C sensor is 26mm diagonal and it's still not considered "Full Frame".

Full Frame is a description of chip technology, not a size designation. It has to do with the read circuitry.

Thanks John,

I had to do a bit of research to fully understand it. In all both offerings, especially the SBIG one looks interesting. But I'm not sure I really want to lose imaging FOV.

No self-guiding. looks like an upgraded ST402.

Re: Orions new Frame readout CCD astrocamera... new [Re: jrcrilly]

The title should be changed to "Frame readout" CCD.

Full frame is the size.
KAF8300 CCD only has the size as four-thirds (type-4/3", diagnoal 22.5mm which is just slightly more than half of the full frame) cameras.

Frame readout method is one of the CCD readout method.

That's not how the term is used in the industry. Consumer cameras are only one portion of the CCD imaging market.

John,

You are right.

"Full Frame" readout would be a better way.
"Full Frame" size would be about the imager area.

Clear Skies!

Actually the title doesn't need to be changed at all, this is how the vendor lists it on their website. This post was only to point folks to an interesting new product from Orion.

the type of CCD is a full frame transfer CD, in the CCD world "full frame" does indeed mean something different than it does in the DSLR world. Most of the cheaper CCD cameras use sony CCDs with interline transfer CCDs.

The 8300 sensor is as easy to use as an interline sensor because it has ABG gates (antiblooming), but still maintains some of the extra sensitivity of a normal full frame CCD. Other chips with similar architechure are the Kodak 16803 and 09000 sensors, used in the big medium format 16 and 9 megapixel square sensor cameras ($10k range), the 8300 is the smaller format, smaller pixel version. It is taking the CCD world by storm, SBIG and Orion are actually getting in late in the game, but the other 8300 cameras are still $3500 and up.

This new SBIG uses the more basic body, similar to the ST402.

cant wait!

I assume some of the price difference in the Orion to SBIG camera is that the Orion has a 32 meg buffer. This is a very nice addition to the camera and one I hoped SBIG would offer. The Orion camera makes no mention of cooling delta. Anyone have any info on a filter wheel offering from Orion?

they have to drop the price, SBIG generally has better electronics than the starshoot, unless orion significantly upgraded for the 8300 camera. SBIGs filter wheel will probably get both its power and commands from the camera itself, where orion will require a wheel with its own control (most big camera systems do as well, SBIG is a little better on making all the components work as a single system)
