I purchased this 6"f8 from the Bellingham school surplus back in June and just now got it cleaned up and working. I would have done it sooner if I had known what a great scope it is. Mirror was made March 20th 1972. Nice sturdy mount, tracks well. I wasn't expecting such a well figured mirror, Cave must have put the same quality even in the small ones. Bellingham school dist. could not help much about it's history or what level classes used it, just that it was retired long ago and no records exsist.

This is the first one I have looked through and I know now it won't be the last.
This is the drive. It was all glued together from the dried up grease. Very delicate assembly, need to be careful setting it up.

The RV6 which were sold by the boat load, while a fine scope is outclassed by the Cave. Thanks for sharing. Bill

Be advised there is a thin plastic ring between the drive gear plate and the gear. This is a clutch and it is fragile.

I didn't see anything like that sandwiched inside the clutch. Just metal to metal with dried up grease. Could be that it's gone and had been replaced by the grease. Seems to work fine. I have it set to just hold with the OTA properly balanced.

The views are very good, so good that it has become my primary scope. I have put my refractors away for the winter. I have a real dew problem here in the valley and this scope is dew resistant except for the finder.
I can't believe how nice this simple basic Cave is, they are wonderful. Now I'm fighting the temptation for a larger one.

Robert.....Looks like an extremely easy to service motor drive. Built like a tank to last if not left to the elements. Mike

The drive is easy to service and yes built to last. Two high ratio gear sets for accurate tracking.
The finder is almost certain Japanese but anyone recognize it?
The finder rings and focuser are also Japanese.

Very nice Robert The early 70's Cave 8" f/7 that I bought from my astro club has an extraordinarily fine mirror as well. Here is a picture of it after I restored it to as close to it's original condition as I could. I'm certain you'll get a great deal of enjoyment out of yours

I would like to try out the rotating rings sometime. As can be seen my Student comes with the 1" mount and "Semi rotating" tube as Cave states. But for me coming from the fixed, bolted in place tube of my Edmund 6" even simi rotating is a great advancement and releaf for my aging couch potato body.
The views from this scope are excellent, star test is just about a perfect mirror. The only thing that has me wondering is the natural color I see at the ep in comparison to my Fluorite refractor. Jupiter is a good example. With the Cave the planet is a little more pastel, washed out than in the refractor which is a richer salmon. And star colors the same. I don't know if this is just reflected vs refracted light or if my Cave is in need of a recoat. It looks fine but I think it is the original coating from 1972.
I'm going to study this finanamun a little more.
