CSI Question new
      #3423744 - 11/01/09 12:55 PM Attachment (10 downloads)

I had my first light with my new to me (used) 14 inch Meade LX200 GPS. At startup it began a process called "Fingerprinting". I have a 12 inch GPS and I have never seen this at start up. BTW both scopes are polar mounted.

I couldn't find anything in the manual.

Thanks.

From Meade 4M site

QUESTION: the scope says it’s doing FINGERPRINTING initializing I have seen no mention of this in manual – what is fingerprinting?

ANSWER: It is determining the errors in the three turns by measuring -exactly- how many arcseconds the encoder is measuring happen between the magnetic index sensings.
I think it has to do with changing the gears such as installing Buck's gears. The mount has to "fingerprint" the new gearing is my guess.

Ian,

I purchased this scope used. I know that it was updated to the latest version of Autostar before I purchased it. I don't know about any gear replacements. My understanding is that it wasn't needed for the 14 inch GPS. The scope was demonstarted in Alt AZ. I used it for the first time in Polar. That's when the message appeared. I tried it again today and iy did not occur again.

Thanks

Hi starman,
changing the gears would'nt bring this message up, maybe after a strip down and reboot???. Anyway as you will see below the message indicates that the update is now changeing the behaviour of the smartdrive system, and converting the PEC data to a new format.
the following txt is copied from :-
C:\Program Files\Common Files\ASCOM\Telescope\MeadeLX200GPSHelp.htm

"STARMAN YOUR HELP FILES SHOULD BE IN THE SAME LOCATION"

it states about fingerprinting :-
NOTE: If you upgrade from firmware 3.0i to any 4.xx version, you must power-on, align, then park the scope using the handbox one time. This firmware upgrade alters the Smart Drive behavior, and existing PEC data must be converted to the new format. You should see a special "fingerprinting" phase on the handbox during this initial power-up.

hope that helps
Ian

Ian.

Thanks. The previous owner did ugrade the software. Interestingly, this message did not appear until I started it up in polar mode. I'm thinking that the previous owner did not go through the process you described.

Thanks. It seems to be behaving normally.

Hi Herman,
i can only guess that when he did the demo for you he used a keypad hotkey to bypass smartdrive function.

Thask,

If you want to know details look in the "Observatories" Thread for my Post "Everythings chang'in and rearrang'in". I describe the recent modifications and how the piers were designed and constructed.

Yes... A very nice setup there! I was thinking of getting a 14-incher in the ACF/OTA variety which is the largest that can fit into my SkyShed POD.

Also, I see you have a SkyShed pier! I am definitely getting one of those after stumbling around in the dark over my RCX400 tripod legs...

Actually, I designed the pier over 20 years ago and just modified it to handle the size and weight of the 14 inch. I work with my local blacksmith. He and I have built and modified my piers. If you go to the Observatory section and check out my post "Everythings Chang'in and Rearrang'in" you will see how I modified both of the piers in my observatory. The 14 inch telescoppe pier in shown in the last 2 pages of the thread.
