Removing Dew Shield from Astro Tech AT80LE new
      #3426973 - 11/03/09 08:19 AM

Like alot of the Astro Tech 80mm scopes, my AT80LE scope is a little killer, but there's way too much wiggle in the fit of the dew shield. I would like to add some adhesive-backed velvet to the front exterior of the OTS to snug up the dew shield's fit. How do I remove the dew shield's front retaining ring?

Astronomics told me it should just unscrew, but the danged thing won't budge and I don't want to damage the OTA. I love this scope and if I sell it, this would only be to move up to the AT106. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

The dew shield should easily unscrew from the slide mechanism. Then, remove the focuser and slide the retainer off, apply some felt and reinstall. If it doesn't unscrew easily, try wearing latex gloves to help get a better grip. If that doesn't work, try a rubber strap wrench.

The interior of the front trim ring is threaded. Just unthread the interior ring from the entire trim ring assembly and it will allow you to push the dew shield past the lens.
