first, i know the value of getting out to a dark sky, but it just doesn't happen much for me. on the other hand, i use my scopes a lot here in the burbs of Phoenix.
when people talk about the extra light transmittion and sharpness of the 10mm Pentax XW, as compaired to other eps, i question is this extra difference just noticed under dark skies, or would i see a difference under light pollution?
i think anything extra helps, but i know LP is an evil thing!
any comments?
thanks, david

to follow up to my question... the reason i ask this... think about computers for a second. let's say you build your own computer... get the fastest motherboard with the fastest bus speeds, the fastest processor, even dual or quad core, the fastest RAM, and lots of it, the fastest hard drive, the fastest video card with dual core and dual bus... but then, instead of playing video games that need all the speed, you just open Word, Excel, check email, and of course, visit Cloudynights website. all the extra punch you get from all the fastest parts really do nothing for Excel and Word and such.
so my question is about the extra punch of the XW10. will it even be seen under LPed skies?

yep.
I'll bet my light pollution is WAY better than your light pollution. The 10xw throws a great image, sodium or no sodium.

Assuredly yes. Agree with the above post - the 10XW is worth getting whether using it from your LP'd backyard or a dark site. I have compared it's performance with others of similar focal length in my collection under skies of different NELMs. The excellent characteristics displayed by this fine EP are apparent relative to the others in the same proportion regardless of NELM.
Go for it.

I think any of the Pentax eyepieces with SMC coatings exhibit that tendency, I notice it with my XF12 as well.
