M42 + Horsehead region new
      #3426740 - 11/03/09 01:47 AM

Below is my attempt for the region. Image is a bit noisy since total exposure was quite short. I must revisit this region and its surroundings in the future for better shots. Any comments or suggestions are most welcome!

Technical details:
Tak FSQ-106ED + 0.73x reducer, 385mm f/3.7,
EM-11, modified 5D,
iso1000, 8 x 300s exposures (total 40 mins)
Autoguided using MiniBORG50 + QHY5, PHD Guiding
stacked using DSS, processed using PS CS4
Synthetic star spikes created using StarSpikes Pro

Very nice. Trying to take a similar picture is on my astrophotography "to do list" for this winter.

I think your image of M42 and B33 is outstanding.

Where did you shoot it from?

Jerry

Thanks, Jerry!
The location was near the Hehuan Mountain (合歡山) in Taiwan. The mountain top is >3000m, but I shot right outside my hostel which is about 2100m in altitude.

Thanks, Nils!
This is 35mm full-frame from the modified 5D camera, not a mosaic. I hope I can do a mosaic of the entire Orion region in the future...

Excellent work. It had to be really dark skies at that location considering that's only 40 minutes of data. Wow.

Thats an incredible M42, very nice capture. Like others say.. that must be a crazy dark sky, even the dark dust lanes are standing out from the background
