A few months back I snuck an SV70 into the house. I would like to set it up as a day scope. 1.25" erect image diagonal and a nice zoom. The problem is I don't think I can get any zoom on this thing. Don't get me wrong, I love this little scope and it performs as advertised. I have the M1 mount from SV and with the shoe on the SV70 that does not give you much room to slide forward. I know I can turn the shoe around and get a little bit more room, but that only gets in the way of the focuser and I have to *BLEEP* the telescope. I also prefer not to do this as it brings me too close to the tripod. The weight of the diagonal should not be a problem as it is only about a half an ounce more than a regular diagonal. These zooms weigh like a two inch eyepiece. And the SV70 just does not like it. I can tighten down the alt knob, however, the scope doesn't swing as free as I'd like. Unless one of you can help me with a lighter weight and somewhat higher quality zoom, I'm afraid I'll have to stick with single focal length (1.25") eyepieces. I was also considering, damn the torpedoes, attaching about eight ounces of weight to the front of the scope and get the Baader Zoom? Is there a way to do this or is this not advisable? Any experience with a zoom and this scope would be appreciated.

Check out this thread by Phil about his SV70ED and Baader Hyperion 8-24mm zoom - seems the combo works pretty well together:

What you don't know is I had the same problem. I solved it by adding another plate, I think they call it T6 onto the shoe, this lets it stand out just enough to turn and work smooth. No problem. Also you have enough of plate to get a balance with the Baader zoom with barlows. I use a 2X barlow "Stellarvue" and a 3X "Orion". The 3X and the zoom on 8mm gives 160X and real good views of the moon.

Phil. Thanks for the ideal. I checked out those photos of your setup. I knew they offered the T6 plate, could not see how it would work. Very well from the looks of yours. Looks like I will be ordering the Baader zoom and the T6 plate.

Hold on, I think I was wrong on the T-6 plate. After checking, I think I have either the TP-5 or the TPBV2 I will check to be sure and post a picture. Give me a couple hours.

OK, I think I got the TP-5 plate. It provides just enough room for the focusing knob to turn. Hope this helps. Oh I have stacked the two barlows for 6X and in the daytime with the zoom on 8mm for 325X, It's not a bad view.

Here is a picture of Jupiter I took tonight with my SV-70 I had the Baader Zoom on 12mm and a 2X and a 3X barlow stacked for 210X . I just held my camera a Fuji F-30 up to the eyepiece and snapped. No kidding!

I have both the SmartAstronomy and Badder Hyperion Zooms. I prefer the SA in my WO ZS 110 and LS 60 HA because the shorter focal lenght, 7.5 vs 8 , gives me more magnification. It's also lighter at 9oz vs 13oz. The optical quality of both eyepieces is very good. The SA does show some ghosting on Jupiter while the Hyperion doesn't. The Hyperions FOV is bigger than the SA but the SA's is still good sized. I do like the Hyperion better in my cats. David
