The Flying Bat - Sharpless 129 new
      #3422319 - 10/31/09 06:10 PM

Here is an image of Sharpless 129. I do not take any credit for the name - I saw it on the internet - really. But in looking at the image, you can imagine something flying. Image is at:

Hi and great shot Jim! couple of questions...did you use deconvolution? and, how are you using your Ha filter with the camera lens?

No, I didn't use deconvolution. I did use some selective sharpening (unsharp mask). Basically it is a duplicate layer with kind of strong sharpening. Stars and background are masked out and the nebular region's mask is painted to "reveal" sharpened features.

Regarding the camera lens, I have a pretty short back focus camera and a thin filter wheel (Astronomik filter cells are thin). I home made a Canon lens to T-thread adapter - very short - 11 mm. So this setup allows me to come to focus with the lens with filter wheel attached. Makes the Ha and RGBs very convenient.

I don't shoot much with it on the CCD but I have done some work with the DSLR:
http://www.jthommes.com/Astro/DSLR/IC4601Region.htm
http://www.jthommes.com/Astro/DSLR/VulpeculaCorner.htm
http://www.jthommes.com/Astro/DSLR/M16M17Region.htm
http://www.jthommes.com/Astro/DSLR/Rho_Ophi.htm

I did take data on the M7 region with this lens and CCD, but I did not like the data and never processed it. So I guess this is the first processed image with this lens and CCD.
It does make f/2.8 (max aperture for this lens). It would shoot at f/2.8 with the CCD as the lens is not powered from the CCD - so it would be wide open. Instead, I use a physical lens mask that approcimates f/4 on the front of the lens.

Great image of a tough object. It covers a lot of sky.

I tried 20 years ago with hypered 2415 film, a 135mm f/3.5 lens and a Lumicon sort of H alpha filter. You could tell it was there but that's about it. Never tried again. I've thought about trying to adapt camera lenses to my 11K but never got beyond that. Going DSLR in winter might work if they function at our -35C and below temperatures. Doubt the battery would like that.

Rick

Rick, Eric
Thanks for the comment.
Rick, I think the 11K would work well - particularly if the lens can do well on covering the chip at an f/4 or less. The image scale doesn't require pinpoint tracking accuracy and if you get some nice transparent skies, the outcome could be dramatic. Its a pretty area of the sky.
