I posted once before on this EP and there wasn't much chatter over it. I'll try again and not bring it up again.
Does anyone have any of these and what is your opinion on them? They were well-regarded when new, but at that time, not too many folks had splurged on TeleVue. That has changed now for sure. I can say that it definitely does not perform well on faster scopes. It is positively rotten on my f4.9 newt, but marginally better on an f5 ST120.
I have not tried it on a slower cat, but suspect that it might be decent in that application.
Can anyone confirm?

Used to own one back in the early '90s, and employed on an Astrophysics Star 12 (120mm f/8.5). I recall that it worked well, and I liked it primarily for its close-to-maximum field stop diameter for a 2" eyepiece. It delivered nearly the same FOV as a TV 55 Plossl, but the higher magnification and much larger AFoV were more desirable.
I sold it to the same friend for whom I made a 5" f/5 bino. He located another 40mm and just loves the big, bright view.
As for myself, I'd probably donate a lesser-used organ for a pair of the Ultrascan 30mm jobbies!

I has a couple of Ultrascans back in the day. Recently I sold the last remaining example I owned; a 9mm 1.25".
My impression was (a) nice and sharp on-axis, (b) not so nice at the edge of the field in faster scopes, and (c) make-your-eyeball-bleed short eye relief. I would estimate <2mm eye relief on the 9mm.
Regards,
Jim

Thanks, guys. I suspect I'll hold onto it. I will say that, even on the faster scopes, it does provide sharp views over ~75% of the field. It's just that outside 25...
Anyway, if nothing else, it makes a great object finder EP. And if I ever get that C14 with 2" Feathertouch . . .

While I've not seen or used an Ultrascan, I had a somewhat similar Meade 40mm "Extra Wide Field" that dated to the 1980's. I sold it for what probably was a bargain a couple of years ago, though regret it a little. These older widefield oculars are sought-out by some who have a nostalgia. Then, I recall in a long conversation I had with a fellow amateur that (from his opinion) sometimes older (simpler) optical designs can perform surprisingly well against newer designs that use many elements.
