There is a bright star about 0.5 degrees Southwest of Jupiter. Is it a double? According to stellarium, it is not, but I keep seeing a blue component due north of the yellow primary. Am I being tricked by the atmosphere, or my eyes?

Maybe an optical double or a chance alignment of two unrelated stars.

I assume you mean the 4.5 mag star which would be iota Capricornae. WDS lists nothing for this star. Starry Night's database says it is single. When I zoom in on the star in Starry night no field star appears, either. What separation was the pair? What magnitude was the bluish companion? PA of the companion? There's a remote chance you have caught an asteroid..... or a Nova!?!?

Thanks for replies, gentlemen. Cotts, I think that is the one I saw. Like I said, Stellarium said it was not a double, either. To my eye, it looked like the kind of split you get with delta cygni, where the companion is snug up against the primary. I was using my 100ED... perhaps the star showed spurious color because it was low in the atmosphere with poor seeing, gave the effect of a companion star.

I observed Jupiter last night and noticed 3 stars in the field of view. 2 of them were very faint. The third one was bright but did not appear double in my scope. It was fun checking this out. Thank you for your post.
