Observatory Pier Question
      #3429011 - 11/04/09 11:17 AM

I am considering the installation of a Pier-Tech 2 telescopic pier for the observatory I will be building. I am interested to learn from other users of this pier how well it damps out vibration, especially compared to other steel or concrete piers you have used?

I will be using the pier with at TEC 140, C9.25, and possibly a Mewlon 250 in the future.

Thanks in advance for your input.

Regards,

Keith

Never tried one; but the 12" concrete pier I use dampens everything that can be dampened.

Thanks Rick,

I spoke with the manufacturer of the Pier-Tech 2 and he indicated that typical damping time was on the order of 3 seconds. That seems like significant damping time for a telescope mounted on an observatory pier.

I'm sure there are tradeoffs for having the convenience of being able to easily adjust the height of the pier and perhaps the damping time due to the hollow structure is one of the tradeoffs.

How do you have your 12" concrete pier loaded and how quickly does it dampen out vibration?

Regards,

Keith

I have a Pier-Tech2 installed in my OBS. It was originally installed with a 10" SCT on a wedge. It now holds a Paramount ME with 12" SCT with other scopes piggy-backed.

While I never measured the damping time it has never been an issue that I have noticed visually or while imaging.
