Good seeing this frosty morn, with a little ice haze, something going on with the NPH/cap. It's really nice when all the gear works perfectly in the cold.

Denis, Great sketch of Mars. Lots of detail. Do you have your telescope in an observatory? I'm assuming that you get up early in the morning rather than staying up all night. With a scope in an observatory it would be close to the ambient air temperature. otherwise you would have to get earlier to have enough cool down time. Dean

Actually the scope lives in an unheated garage under it's Telegizmos cover with mirror and end covers, usually it's only a few degrees above ambient and I run the fan during collimation checks and aligning the platform. This morning I got up at 0330 and was setup by 0410, I then observed, sketched, and imaged until 0600. As the apparition progresses, I will be getting up later until Mars becomes a middle of the night to evening object. My patio happens to be in a nice dark spot and I have understanding neighbours who keep their floodlights off.

Good sketch! You caught Huygens crater there, just under Mare Serpentis; and also Lacus Moeris sticking out the left of Syrtis Major. I've only found Huygens definitely on one of my sketches, done with an 8" newtonian when Mars was much closer in 2005. Very impressive that you bagged it at this distance!
I also notice that the terminator is uneven. Is that because you sketched it freehand, or were you actually seeing it that way?

Thanks all, the terminator is uneven because my hands were cold at the time, I do not as a rule rework my sketches after observing, too easy to add what you thought you saw, I am trying to stay as objective as possible.

Thanks, conditions have been quite variable which affects the image with a still small disk.
