This is a little idea I had due to some laptops and pc's which are in theory compatible with the Meade DSI, not actually working in practice. This has led to stress, and also wasted money.
If other users would be kind enough to post details of what computers/laptops work with the Meade DSI, and also what don't, it may become a useful little data base to help any one thinking about buying a DSI to know whether their computer/laptop will work with the DSI.

A Mac running Virtual PC (version 7 and any version of it) will give you a DSI error message. The software DOES work in Virtual PC ver. 7 but what good is that if the DSI is not recognized.
Note: The LPI does work on a Mac running Virtual PC.
My PC (intel celeron) with USB 1 does work. I put a USB 2 card in it and after several tries and the update it works. STILL No good images though.

I got an Toshiba satellite pro 2100 (P4 1.7Ghz 256Mb)with win XP. Original with USB1.1 (works nice) but i bought an sitecom PCMCIA USB 2.0 card this works very good for me. A little note on this card: You NEED the 5 volt power adapter, because the card can't deliver the power the DSI needs.

Could it be insufficient power provided by notebook USB?

That's a thought - I wonder if a powered intermediary USB hub would help?

No. At least not in my case. I tested with and without one.
On a side note; it might by more handy/wise to write down the USB chipsets which work/don't work.

Are you using the DSI on the naitive USB ports or did you get an external card?

Thinkpad T22/XP Pro SP2 with Belkin powered 2-port USB 2.0 PC-Card: Works well. Doesn't work with built in USB regardless of presence of Meade update. Just as a note, the Belkin adapter (the only thing left at Fry's after Xmas invasion) installed automagically -- no driver disk needed -- and worked immediately.
Thinkpad 760ED/WIN98OSR2 with generic powered USB 2.0 PC-Card: worked as well as could be expected for 133MHz machine -- full functionality seems to be there, although operation is slow.

Thinkpad X21 specs: (which don't work) Processor Speed: 700 MHz Chip Type:Intel Pentium III Hard Drive Capacity: 20 GB Memory (RAM): 128 MB Screen Size: 12 inches Primary Drive: CD-ROM Features: 10/100 LAN Card, Modem, USB 1.1
BTW the Toshiba A60 Equium specs are: (which do work)
Intel Pentium 4 2.8GHz 256Mb of memory 40.0Gb hard disk and USB 2.0
Happing imaging y'all
PS the Thinkpad was quite happy with a Toucam Pro and is now sat gathering dust if anyone in the UK fancies it....

So that's two Thinkpads with problems with the built-in USB, I'm sensing a theme here.. Anyone have a Thinkpad that works with the DSI with built-in USB 1.1ports?

My Sony Viao 2.54Ghz P4 works with my ATIK. Does the DSI use a parallel port connection or just a USB 2.0? The ATIK run a parallel port and USB connection. I think that the DSI would be just fine on a Sony Viao with and Intel P3 or 4 processor.
