C80ED vs other ED APOs
      #3429788 - 11/04/09 07:48 PM

Hi folks

Been very busy of late, and too tired at night,so this is my 1st post in 10days.

I'm seriously thinking of selling my WO 110ED APO doublet to finance a scope purchase, but here's the deal:

I still want to do widefield imaging with a f/6ish ED APO type refractor, and the Orion ED80 I had in the past was really ideal for that. Cheap too.

I just can't justify keeping a £700 scope, as i'm not really an observer, so selling this and getting a 72/80 ED type APO would be the best thing really to raise some funds with the difference and yet still have a widefield scope for imaging.

I have the opportunity to buy a C80ED at a good price.
Any comments about its imaging abilities, build, lens quality?

Also how does the C80ED compare to other ED APOs like the Orion, Skywatcher, Megrez which are all in the same price range second hand - approx £200ish.

No experience of that scope I'm afraid - or any of the others

Kevin, I had a C80ED and now have a W/O ED80II and a Astro Tech 111ED Triplet. The glass on the C80 was as good as the William Optics ED80 are. Probably from the same manufacture, who knows.

The down fall was the mechanics of the focus end. Didn't care for the focuser and not being able to repace it at the time, maybe you can now but all the others come with fine and gorse focusers now so I'ed go with one of the other
brands.

Fit and finish on the focuser is better on most other brands out there. And fine focus is worth it to me.

Yes I agree, the glass never worried me, ED is ED, but at f7.5 as opposed to F6 for most other ED80s my mind most likely is already made up.

I like my C80ED, focuser could be better but works well and fairly easy to focus. The glass is pretty darn good for the price. I can't see any CA what so ever on moon, vega or ther objects. I run mine with a WO x.8 FF2 and has gotten some decent images for being shot 30 sec subs and unguided. I'd recommend the faster 80EDs

I really like mine & I don't see myself ever selling it but I replaced the focuser right off. If you're imaging with it beware of the spacers between the elements. These can stick into the light path and produce funky stars when you get a bright one in the frame. I think this is fairly common on this type of refractor. Hard to beat at the price though.

My Orion ED80 had that problem with the spacers and I followed the article on Andyshotglass web site on trimming them and I added a WO FR VII and I have been very happy with it , even with the stock focuser the bahtinov mask and the focuser lock down knob work good enough for me.

I don't understand, why do you want sell 110mm telescope and will you buy smaller one with ED lenses too?

I need to raise funds to purchase a C8 Hyperstar system, I figured I could still do some excellent wider field imaging with a nice f/6 ED80 and have a faster SCT for closeup work with 3 options of f/10, f/6.3 and f/2!
