Can somebody tell me what is the difference between these two scope's? I am getting 76.2MM Tasco on Friday. From what I can see in the Tasco catalog I got from a link here on CN, these are the only 2 that had the 76.2MM objective.

So far as I have been able to determine, early on (before 1968) the 15TE was pier mounted. In the 1968 catalog page here
The differences are in the accessories, particularly the presence of a clock drive with the 15TE. Mine had the bracket for the clock drive on the mount but not the clock drive itself.
Someone else may have come up with other differences. There is at least one thread compiling serial numbers of 10TE/15TE.
As far as anyone has posted, both are superb optics.
I'm sure others will chime in soon.

My 15TE has a beefier tripod than that on my 10TE. I posted some pics and the dimensions to another thread about a month ago. Additional the 1oTE has an azimuth scale on the mount base, the 15 TE does not.

The 15TE is the MUCH more desireable scope.
The Tasco motor drive (which is unobtainable by itself) will not fit the 10TE which is crafted for manual control only.
Also as has been mentioned, the 15TE tripod is better.

Indeed the 15TE is more desirable, but the motors do occassionally turn up, In fact, I found one in great shape with the box a few months back. The motor can be fitted to the 10TE and the instruction (pretty poor) show how in minimal detail. Robert posted a copy of the instructions that came with my motor on his site http://geogdata.csun.edu/~voltaire/classics/

Is there anyway to tell them apart when your standing there looking at one? Either way sounds like they are both good scopes..

Nest to onantother the tripods can tell them apart. My 10TE has an azimuth scale, the 15Te doesn't but it has an altitude scale that;s not there on the 10TE. The motor is an obvious one too.

I would wait and buy a 15TE if I were looking for a Tasco.
The two 10TEs I had were okay at $35 and $60 but the 15TE I have is a much better scope including optics.

Is there any objective, quantifiable science that leads to this conclusion?
From all accounts, one is typically lead to believe that the OTA's were essentially identical.

We had three experienced observers do blind tests of the two 10TEs and the one 15TE..they thought the 15TE was the best.
YMMV

Well I pick it up this afternoon and don't have the time right now to put it together again. I did see that it has a altitude and no azmiuth scale. according to the person I got it from it all fits in the wooden box. He couldn't figger out how to get it all in there when I picked it up. Does anyone have one with the styrofoam insert to hold the parts, so I can see how it all goes in it. I think it is the 15TE. I will try and get it together in the next day or two and get a couple of pictures up.

OK I am finally in a position to go through the scope. I have a few pictures I will post also. It is in really good condition. I am pretty sure I will have to clean the old grease out of the mount and all that since the scope was a little sluggish when I did get it out when the temperature was about 35 or so. I also am in need of the 2 chrome screws that hold the eyepieces in place and one for the barlow lens. Those and the image erector seem to be the only things missing. I am not to sure how many eyepieces can originally though. It has 3, but there is space for 2 more. I would like to have confirmation if possible that this in fact a 15TE or 10TE.. The only problem I have now is the CFO of the household says my ATCO has to go..(darn it)

One last thing, is there a manual floating around somewhere for the scope? Now all I have to find is a motor..
