New dob, new eyepiece
      #3430390 - 11/05/09 03:34 AM

I have my new xt10i dob on the way, should be here next week. I was thinking of getting a new eyepiece to use with it. I currently have a 19mm Panoptic & a 2x televue barlow so I'm thinking of either a higher or lower power eyepiece.
In my little 5 inch dob I have been getting some good views of Jupiter but I would love to see more detail. So I'm leaning towards a higher power eyepiece maybe a 13mm Nagler or the Meade 5000 14mm UWA. What do you think of these two? Or should I think again?

Both are great EPs. The 13T6 is lighter, more compact, and 1.25" only, the 14UWA is heavier and has a 2" skirt so can be used as either a 1.25" or 2". When I had an XT10i I had a 13T6 but swapped it out for a 12T4 for longer eye relief as I had issues with getting eye lash oil smudges on the 13T6 eye lens. It was my most used EP in that scope.

Chris
I did the same as Jim, the 12mm Nagler t4 has very generous eye relief & is a pleasure to use in my xt10i!

Even though my 12T4's use has largely been replaced by my 13E, I still use it from time to time in some of my scopes because it is a really comfortable eyepiece that gives an excellent view. Before the 13E came out, it was probably my most used EP.

I can't justify spending an extra £200 on the Ethos. I love the view through the Panoptic and I've never looked through a Nagler so I reckon I would be blown away by the 82 degree field of view. The 12T4 is dual skirt and I've read that some people don't like this feature, why is this?

I love the dual skirt option on all eyepieces!
I dont play around with adapters that much!
I like that i can go from my 35mm pan 2" to my 12t4 nagler!
Or use my plossls 1.25" and just put my 12t4 in!
They are a bit heavier, that may be the only negative for some people!

The 13 Nagler T6 has been a great, top quality work horse for me in my XT10. It and my 16mm Nagler get the most use, because I usually use Barlows for higher mags.

If the seeing is average or better Jupiter looks great with the 13mm and a 2x barlow. With good seeing I can use it with my 2.5 Powermate, or 3x barlow when seeing is excellent.

The dual skirt is really only an issue if you: 1) are using primarily 1.25" EP's and 2) the lip of your focuser is too thick to fully insert the eyepiece because the distance between the 1.25" barrel and the 2" skirt isn't sufficient. If you are working with 2" EP's at your longer focal lengths, then you can simply use the 12T4 as a 2" EP (which is what I do).

The 12T4 is a great eyepiece because 1) it gives a great overall view, not just the field of view, but the quality and sharpness of the view, and 2) it is very comfortable to look through. To me, comfortable observing can literally give you an additional half magnitude of reach as well as better appreciation of the details of any object.

I would certainly not hesitate to recommend the 12T4, in any case.

I agree in principle it sounds like a dual skirt would make things easier.

Guys, the 12 T4 is not a dual skirt eyepiece. That would be a 12 T2. Having said that, I would recommend the 13T6, as it will work really well with your 1-1/4" barlow. The UWA 14 Series 4000 is an awesome eyepiece, but it's giant, heavy and has a duel skirt which is hard to use with a 1-1/4" barlow.
FWIW, I hate the moving barrel on all T4 eyepieces.

Hey Steve. Humm, maybe we're not on the same page as to what "dual skirt" means. The 12T4 is definitely a dual 1-1/4 and 2-inch design. Isn't that "dual skirt"?

I'm presuming that the 12T4 being dual skirt would work with my 1.25" barlow?

Agree, using my 12T4 while i use 2" EPs is great and easy. I could never figure out why some do not like dual skirts.

A major advantage of the 12T4 over the 13T6 is if you live in a country with cold weather. I used the 13T6 and it fogged so rapidly compared to the 12T4 that it was easy to make a decision.

The 12T4 is also more immersive than the 13T6 (at least for me).

I would say that the UK is sometimes a cold country but compared to Canada it may be classed at just slightly chilly.

If the click-stop eyeguard is too loose when you get that T4, remember it is easy to remove the eyeguard and bend the little wire that makes it work. Once you bend it into the correct shape the click-stop eyeguard works great. But if you leave it loose it will become very annoying. I think the people that hate the click-stop have just never bothered to make the adjustment.

The 12mm Nagler type 4 will not come to focus on the Orion 10" in 2" mode, Ive tried. You will need a 2" extender. I am not sure about using it in 1.25" mode though, you might be good there.
