Inner or Outer focus?
      #3430574 - 11/05/09 08:33 AM

For those who have used both 41 Pan and 31 Nag, can you please tell me whether the pan focuses inner or outer than the 31 nagler?

The same goes for the 17 Ethos. Does the 17 ethos focuses inner or outer than the 31 nagler?

Thanks.

The 17E and 31T5 Nagler are parfocal (or extremely close to being such), i.e. the come to focus at the same position in focusers. As to the 41Pan vs 31T5 - I'll have to leave that for someone else to answer.

According to Tele Vue here

http://www.televue.com/engine/page.asp?ID=144

(see column F), the 41mm Panoptic focuses

0.27-(-0.38) = 0.65" farther out than the 31mm Nagler.

The 17mm Ethos focuses

-0.39-(-0.38) = -0.01" father out, which of course means that you have to rack the focuser in by about a hundredth of an inch when switching from the 31mm Nagler to the 17mm Ethos. In practice these numbers tend not to be as precise as they appear, so I'd say a difference like that is parfocal.

From what I can understand. When takinig the 31 out and placing the 41, I will have to move the focuser out by o.65" to achieve focus. Right?

Right, that's what the numbers are saying.
