I am doing soome prelimenary research for a new product line. Your input is greatly appreciated.
If you own a 10" or 12.5" conical, what size tube (or other container) is yours mounted in?
For example, I personally own two Royce conicals. My 8" is mounted inside a 10" hastings tube, and my 12.5" is mounted inside a wooden mirror box.
I suspect most people go with a 10" tube for the 8" mirrors, and a 12" tube for the 10" mirrors. The 12.5" is where it gets more interesting.
Does anyone have a 12.5" conical mounted inside a 14" or 16" tube?
Thanks again for your feedback.

My 12" F4 will be living in a 14" tube.... Best take a look at Newt and see what it says for your mirror and layout. You can Google NEWT telescope design if you are unfamiliar

I would go with the larger dia tube and corresponding larger secondary. It is going to be a trade-off. This is just my personal preference. I am more worried about the thermal issues than the increase in CO. If a truss design is used, then there is little worry about the tube size providing you are ok with any vignetting a smaller tube may cause.
It would be best to look at the overall design before deciding on a tube size.

My 10" will be living in a Truss-tube that has an internal diameter of just over 11.5 inches (a Lightbridge truss tube.) I've run the numbers through Newt several times, and don't forsee any issues with my rig.

I have a 14.5" royce conical mounted in a 20" tube. I have plans to upgrade the mirror to 18" one day and re-use the same tube.
cheers, Bird

I bought an Astrozap 10" f/4.5 Newtonian as a starting point, and modified the mirror cell to take a conical. It has a 11.8" ID tube like the Meade SN - same cell in fact. Rolled aluminum seamless tube stiffened by cast end rings - simple and inexpensive but attractive and sturdy. GSO make a similar OTA for their Dobs.

Thanks everyone for your feedback. You are confirming what I thought to be a general range of norms.

FWIW, my 12.5" conical is in a 14" ID plywood tube. No problems.

I too am interested in this discussion. Not to hijack the thread at all but what are some supplier options for 16" (for a 14.5" mirror) tubes or trusses?

Check the pinned Best of ATM links. I believe drum tubes are listed as a source.

My 1417 posts are inferior to your 45111. I see the sticky, but not the drum tubes...
Hastings Aluminum Tubes seems to max out at 12" diameter. I did a search on the Internet (read Google'd it) but didn't find..
Thanks much!
