For those trying to decide (Skyscan vs other): EQ6 new
      #330404 - 02/02/05 11:10 AM

Check out this pic from Brady Johnson, taken with a Skyscan EQ6 mount, Canon 300D and a Borg 76ED refrator at f6.6.

The pic is absolutely stunning. I think it should settle all the debate on whether the Skyscan has "arrived" as a viable challenger on the playing field in the highend area of astrophotography.

My Skyscan is coming soon!!!!

What does everyone think?

I have heard several spitefull coments regarding the EQ6, but this is just amazing! I dont know how the Atlas compares to the skywatcher, but I am convinced now that the EQ6 is trully a great mount.

I heard the same and was a little hesitant about picking up the EQ6 Skyscan but I have to admit that I'm loving the mount!

It appears they've fixed the jerkiness and high frequency oscillation issues with the Skyscan. Apparently, the retro kit they sell (to convert the EQ6 to a Skyscan) comes with new motors too.

It's a very nice image, but it's not exactly a demanding setup for the mount, is it? It's only 500mm focal length.

Well, knowing you might say something like this Brady also tested with greater loads.....here is some of the conversation that took place between Matt and Brady....

[Comments from Matt]
That picture seems to have an image scale of 3arcsec/pixel unless I missed something. Great for wide field, but really sampling becomes the limit rather than seeing . Also some mount tracking issues could be hidden in the 3arcsec/pixel sampling .

[Brady's answer]
Yes, 3 arc seconds/pixel is about right. I do mainly widefield imaging so this is right in my ballpark.

[Matt]
Perhaps a longer focal length instrument would be more
representative of what people would use on an EQ6, rather than a 500mm short lightweight achromat . Just some remarks, not meant to detract in any way from your beautiful image achievement with the EQ6.

[Brady]
You're right that a longer focal length is a better test of the tracking, but I doubt many people are going to go longer than about 1250 mm for imaging anyway. If you do, you are probably shooting planets and a web cam would be the way to
go. Tracking is a minor consideration in that case.

I did measure tracking with a heavier load the previous evening. The scope was a 6" f/5 refractor and the 76ED was piggybacked on it and used for autoguiding, just to get a feel for the mount. The guided errors were 6 arc seconds total with that load.

So, a 6" refractor and the 76ED have to weigh well over 40lbs (at the minimum) and to get only a 6" error corrected in my opinion is amazing. The new motors and spur gears are a true advancement for this mount.....

Can't wait to do some real testing and a review to post to all of you......just an amazing improvement.....

I would estimate a 6 inch F/5 reflector to weigh less than 15 pounds (using the Vixen 6 inch f/5 figures) plus about another 5-6 pounds for the Borg 76. This would put the load closer to about 20 pounds total.

Sorry, I misread. I noticed it was a refractor. Not sure what those weigh. More than the reflector to be sure.

kwtelescope.com

I'm not sure of the supply because SkyScan is adding a few useful features to it's controller, namely PEC. These should start shipping in March as I have been told. So we'll see. The one I have they guarenteed free upgrade when available...
