Today while perusing a old issue of S&T I read an article by Ken Hewitt-White referencing 7388 as non-existant. Looking thru my notes I find my observing notes from over a year ago. Gulp, I must have been looking at one of the other galaxies in the group. But I do see 7388 listed in several databases, what's up, does it exist or not? Jim

It's coming up in Seds.org and a couple of other online databases. But I also see that the vmag is 17! So perhaps Hewitt-White is right in saying that it's "non-existent" for the vast, vast majority of us.

Wow! That is sure an obscure object, if it is really that number. I found it on several databases too but there was zero info along with a few fuzzy photos. I'll have to check Megastar tonight and see if it shows up.

Aha, I misread the chart that night. Reviewing my notes and looking at a photo I realize now I was looking at 7386. Thanks for the info. Jim

This is a neat galaxy group and includes NGC 7383, 7385, 7386, 7387, 7389, 7390 and others. William Herschel discovered the brightest two members (NGC 7385 and 7386) and the others were found with Lord Rosse's 72-inch. Unfortunately, two of the "discoveries", NGC 7388 and NGC 7384, are just faint stars in the region.
The paperwork for a few thousand corrected NGC/IC identifications is at http://www.ngcicproject.org/corwin/default.htm
