Geocities is gone today new
      #3412031 - 10/26/09 01:55 PM

Geocities is deleting all of their websites today.

Back up any of your favorite web sites before it's too late.

Despite the great big advertising bar at the side (which was easily minimised), Geocities was a great site for hosting sites. It's a shame it's gone, my first astronomy site was there.

There were quite a few good astro-sketching sites by CN members on Geocities - Rodelaet, Jason Aldridge, Taras for example - these are now gone. Do any of you guys plan to rebuild your sites on new hosts or are they gone forever?

A shame to see these go. I have fond memories of Geocities, Tripod and Angelfire. I did some of my first HTML work on Geocities and Tripod. Hopefully everyone backed up their sites before the shutdown. This is another good example of why a person should keep their registration contact information up to date. Geocities probably sent out emails to warn their users ahead of time, or I would hope they did.

Tripod tried something like that too but they backed away from it.
