I'm thinking of the Astro-Tech AT106 refractor to piggy back on my LX200 or my GEM to use as an alternate imaging scope with my SBIG 4000xcm. Anyone use one for imaging?

There was a four-page review of the AT106 in the September 2009 Sky & Telescope, including comments on imaging performance with and without the Astro-Tech 2" field flattener.

Thank you mblack. Frebie, I know the review, but I've yet to see much meaningful criticism of any product in S&T and Astronomy mags. That's why I posed it here. Thanks for responding.

You will generally find printed reviews are favorable to the product - nobody is going to publish a review that says any particular scope is best suited for the scrap heap. You've come to the right place to find plenty of experiences/opinions on the various scopes out there. You might try searching the refractor forums for previous threads on the 106. Also, check your local astronomy clubs - contact them to see if any members have this scope and would be willing to let you observe with it. Good Luck.

I've never used one out under the stars, but I did spend a lot of time playing around with it at NEAF. I mostly looked at lighting fixtures inside the building and was quite pleased with the sharp views that it provided. Also the mechanics are top rate.I would of bought one at the time, but my budget did not call for it.

Hi Umlas and welcome to CN!
There was a good discussion about the AT106 a little while ago. You may want to go to the top of this window and hit the 'search' button, then select the 'refractor' forum and search for 'AT106' for at least the last year.
Hopefully you will get some more responses here too.

First off, nice astro-pics ROG.
In the shot of M27 and the shot of M45, the brightest stars in the field seem to have some kind of horizontal "diffraction" spikes. What is that? Everything else looks sweet as sugar.
The shots of M31 are knock-your-socks-off.

Hi Jim,
Yes I saw that. M27 was taken with AT106, and M45 was by Orion 80ED. I did think that the spikes were caused by the QHY8 ccd camera, but not quite sure about it.
