Hey All,
Pardon my ignorance, but I want to post a question concerning tapered eyepieces vs. groved. How do the tapered ones work? My assumption is that they are "negatively" tapered, that being tapered to the intent as to stop eyepieces from dropping out of constricted areas, meaning that the taper is larger at the top of the eyepiece to restrict slippage.
And how about groove eyepieces.... is this better? For use do you have to hit the "groove" to maintain secure or correct alignment - adjustment?
I usually "float" the eyepiece within the tube and then lock to best focus (with my 80mm). I can see where a tapered eyepiece is a smart idea.... is my thinking of this correct?

You got it. The whole barrel is not tapered just a small section at the top and it tapers down as you go towards the top of the eyepiece. They work about the same as the grooved type but the taper will not get caught on the brass ring so it comes out easier.

Tapered is better than sharp undercuts but neither allow parfocalizing rings which is why most of us prefer the old straight barrels. Sam
