Question about collimation of TAK FSQ 106ED
      #3432333 - 11/06/09 05:03 AM

Has anyone ever collimated a TAK FSQ 106ED ?
I have a second hand scope that looks like its not delivering optimal views ( I'm getting some color fringes on jupiter).
I may need to collimate but the cost of sending it over to Japan may be prohibitive.

Help from anybody who have done this or who can point out a source of Instructions for collimating it at home (Oh, the sacrilage ! ) will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks for Looking.

Collimating a Takahashi refractor at home is not an option.
This is a very delicate "operation" performed with special tools by trained optical engineers
My advice is to return the scope to your local Takahashi dealer and not try anything which might cause even bigger problems...

Something is decollimated and the design of the four element system requires a trip to Japan to repair it.

We have never had such a problem, but we will do our best to make your scope like new.

Are you the original owner.

Please contact us and speak to Fred for instructions.

We are here to help you.

Art,
Thanks for the info.
I talked with Fred and I will conduct a few more tests as per his advice.

This does not mean your scope has a miscollimation!

To be sure what is what, point your scope on a star near
zenit and look at it with high power (at least 150-160x).
If you will see a round central disk and 1 -2 concentric diffraction rings (depends of a star brightness) - then your scope is OK.
If you will see that diffraction rings are not symetrical and looks like coma, then your scope need to be re-collimated.
Color fringes around Jupiter can be caused by residual chromatic aberration and mostly by atmospheric dispersion.

So, don't be worry before a test!

As low as Jupiter is you shouldn't be surprised to see red on one side and blue on the other from atmospheric garbage.

Also that scope is made to be fully color-corrected *with the addition of the Extender Q*...
