Closed cell foam (cut from a camping mat) is good, it's stretchy enough to fit & sit well, thick enough to support itself and has excellent thermal insulation properties.

I made it with one of those silver auto window shades (thinly insulated), some velcro and some stick on felt (comes in 8x5 sheets) for the inside edge. Measure, cut, wrap, apply velcro where needed. Unwrap put felt on inside edge.

I found all the stuff at a Walmart. Auto, craft and sewing sections. Less than 10 bucks.

Black craft paper and masking tape ... hey, I was on the road in a hurry and it was temporary.

Cost me about a dollar (bought the paper at a dollar store) and it worked fine for the week that I needed it.

Poster board for me too. Lasted 2-1/2 years before needing to replace. $1.00 at the dollar stores.

Heavy duty black plastic Report covers.Cut off the front and back and pitch the paper holder part. For my 8 in., it took 2 covers.Orient them, based on how long you want them, wrap around the 'scope' and duct tape (black)them together.
Trim to size and Velcro. WALLA, Done.
I have these on 4 'scopes', have lasted 3 plus years, so far.Really nice thing is they fold flat if you tape correctly.fit nicely into my "junk bag"(wifes term).
