Dear Thomas,
According to my Astro 30 catalog, if your model is an "Asedabais", your telescope has a type E objective. This catalog is dated 1920.
The set-up on Ebay is what Zeiss calls a Traveling Telescope and without knowing the serial number on the focuser, its hard to tell exactly what time period it is from. I do not own one and will be bidding strongly on this one. Wish me luck.

I saw the 8 in Cave in the Bay this morning. I have bought from the seller before, A Schmidt camera and C14 parts from San Jose state a few years ago. They get scopes once in a while. I put in the first bid. Cant get down there to check it out however.
That 8" Cave looks like the Newt-Cass convertible.

That's what I thought, based on the rotating rings. But there's no Newt focuser. Makes me wonder, though, if the Newt option was an ...option that the school didn't pony up for. Worse case scenario would be that someone buys it hoping to add a Newt focuser and secondary, only to find it's a DK!

I agree. From the first photos, I thought it might be Maple (I saw the curly figure), but Lauan Mahogany would be my guess. The pores are far too open for Maple. Plus, that seemed to be the wood of choice back then for telescope accessories. One of the pictures shows the medullary rays. That look is typical of Lauan, Maple, and American cherry.
They sure do look elegant compared to the typical adjustable height legs of the '60s and '70s. I'm going to make some for replacements of my Sears 90mm.

In the off chance this were to discourage others from bidding on this scope (so *I* can win it! ), I did ask the seller a question, but it hasn't appeared in the ad:
Quote:
You asked - Please tell me it isn't being left outdoors exposed to the elements?
ANSWER - Yes, this item is being stored outside.
Good thing it's not raining! (and likely won't in the next handful of days).

At least fiberglass, glassglass, and aluminum will not rust! Even if it has been rained on, made home to spiders and other critters, and generally suffered, it can be put right.
It's just astonishing how harshly people who don't get it, will treat something like this. They'llt take better care of the vacuum cleaner and barbecue grill.

At least some were convertible; those would have to be classical cassegrains (parabolic primary). I suspect they were all classicals.

HI Andy,
Unfortunately, even though I bid strongly on this Zeiss, I did not bid strong enough. 2160 pounds works out to be about $3600. That plus shipping pushed the price above $4000. Also note that 2160 pounds was the amount the scope sold for, not the maximum the bidder was willing to pay. The winning bidder just wanted this telescope more than I did.
Take care,
Dan

I placed a bid, but was immediately outbid. This news of yours is rather disturbing! Did you inspect it yourself? Do you have pics?

The 8" SCT for auction at shopgoodwill.com appears to have been relisted:
http://www.shopgoodwill.com/viewItem.asp?itemID=5446149
Wonder what happened to the winning bidder? As I recall, it was up around $170 at auction's end last time.

It's really a sad commentary as to where science teaching has gone in some of our schools. When my son was in H.S. I went and spoke to his class on behalf of my Astronomical Society. The teacher showed me a 6" Celestron SCT that they had, but it had not been used in years and no one had a clue how to use it. He also told me about how they disposed of about 10 unused mirror making kits and some refractor kits when they moved into our new "state of the art" H.S.

LOL...wasn't this the scope with the mildrew INSIDE the scope?
The winning bidder likely bailed because the scope was junk.

Yes, it was - err... is. Of course, it's not like they made a secret of the mildew, which is why I couldn't understand why it bid so high. But even though the scope may or may not be any good, it's not like there aren't usable components on it. Shoot, the tripod and wedge alone are worth something, aren't they?

An interesting combination of telescopes is found on the Hartford, Connecticut Craigslist. A classic orange Comet Catcher? on a 1980s Edmund equatorial mounting with tall pedestal base.
The ad was posted on November 11th, and the link to the website is found through:

It looks like the Comet Catcher is missing the corrector plate and the secondary holder is not original. If that is the case then the spherical abberation would be huge with a spherical f/3.5" mirror.

A 1960s? Tasco 4.5-inch equatorially-mounted Newtonian reflector on the Tucson, Arizona Craigslist. The ad was posted on 11-01-09, and the link is found at:

These are great beginner's scopes.
