Hi. I picked up a used Williams 80mm super apo and the focuser slips even with just a 5.2mm XL and diagonal in vertical position. The staff at Feathertouch says I'll need an adapter ring to install one of their fabulous focusers. Anyone go through this proceedure with this ota or any other ota? All opinions, suggestions and experiences would be appreciated.

I'd suggest that you contact WO customer service... they are very responsive, friendly, and helpful. I am sure that this is not normal operation. There may be an adjustment that can be made.

Moonlite (www.focuser.com) makes a 2" focuser (model CF) with a flange that will fit WO 80 mm tubes. I have a moonlite on my FLT-110 and it is simply excellent. They are pricey like the feathertouch but worth it.

Have you tried adjusting the focuser tension?

yes, you will pay top dollar to Starlight but you will get the best focuser. I recently did this for a Vixen OTA, they sent me the wrong adapter tube the first time but they got it right on the second try, the 2 inch FT is very lightweight and SO smooth
the focuser and adapter came out to be about $100 more than Moonlight, which is another good Crayford option

I did try adjusting the tension yah-didn't help. I want something that will handle the weight of a 31t5 on this little Apo. Ya think the Moonlite could do as well as the Feathertouch?
And thanks for the replies- I was ready to give up on this thread

I have two scopes with Feather Touch focusers and one scope that I installed a MoonLite focuser. The MoonLite has no trouble with any weight that can be handled by the Feather Touch. I think you would be happy with either for my money it's a toss up between the 2" MoonLite CF dual rate and 2" Feather Touch.

This does not sound like a normal WO product. Their focuser is very well made and should not slip at all. WO should help you with the problem and will tell you how to send it for repair. I replaced my AT80 focuser with a WO focuser that was made for the AT and it is as good as the FT focuser I have on my AT8RC. The FT can get real expensive because you pay for the focuser, adapter to mount it to the OTA and for the 2" to 1.25" adapter. Don't get me wrong, the FT is a beautiful work of art but the WO is also very well designed.
Wish you Luck, Bill

I use Moonlite on my fs128 and my Vixen 102mm and just ordered one for a 10" Newtonian, so yes, I think they work.

MoonLite lists a mounting flange for the 2" CF that fits the WO 80.
