Cave Nebula (Sh2-155 ) in Cepheus w EON 72mm new
      #3430409 - 11/05/09 04:17 AM Attachment (23 downloads)

Hi Folks. I've got 6.5 hours of exposure in on this target, and it is a tough one to shoot and process. Quite dim, and most of the detail is in the reds, so color balance again was tough.

This is mostly (5.25 hrs) 5 minute exposures but I had 1.25 hours of 2 minute exposures I worked into the mix. Shot with the modded Canon XTi @ iso800 through the EON 72mm @ f4.8 with IDAS LP2 filter, piggybacked on the CPC925 on a Mitty wedge, guided with SSAG through the CPC.

Comments and suggestions welcome. I'm not sure if I'm done with it yet.

WOW Nick, 6.5 hours!?!? Aren't you becoming the photon hog!!
The image looks fantastic, and very smooth processing. So natural and perfect star color.

Thanks Gary. All 6.5 hours really means is I got some sleep that weekend. Seems my best images happen when I'm dreaming. BTW, I should also mention it was shot over three nights.

With fresh eyes today, and a different monitor, I think it looked way too purple/blue in the background. I updated the big image with color tweaks on the link, but I'll leave the little one the original colors if any would care to comment on the change. Thanks.

Nice image.

Mind you 6.5 hours is quite tame really - stuff gets good up at the 10 hour mark. If you are a Hallas or Gendler then 25 to 30 hours is min

I've got to 17 hours once - took 4 nights and it was worth it too

Nicely procesed, preciselly guided, plenty of signal and noise free. It's worth the 6.5hours. Good job.

Hey Nick...glad you posted the link to the larger image. The small one doesn't do all of your work justice. Nice work, indeed!

Excellent shot Nick.

I like the processing , not harsh at all and well balanced.

Thanks everyone. I think Tonk is right, that 10 hours or more would start flushing it out. It took a lot of work to pull out even with 6.5 hours.

It has taken me several nights to get to 10+ hours as well..
But the details do not NEED to be drawn out,you basically just try to "even everything out"...
Its quite remarkable having a lot of signal..Makes me want a LARGE Mono CCD..but that requires a whole lot of money..
So for now,I will just spend a whole lot of TIME!lol

Great image,Nick.
I would be happy with it as is...but can see where you would like to really do it some justice too.. I say go for it. Might end up being your personal favorite or best image..
It's only time....
