I'm looking for some more 82deg eps and the UWANs intruige me. I'm also considering more Axioms or even the ES 82deg parts.
Anyway, from posts it seems the UWANs peform pretty well in terms of contrast/sharpness. Any inputs on how easy for pupil placement? Some eyepieces are very "fussy" about your eye placement and/or have kidney-beaning. How do UWANs do in these regards?
Thanks, Rob

I've owned the complete UWAN set. I've compared them many times with their Nagler counterparts and found them to be very close. I sold off the 16mm because it was replaced with an Ethos 17. The 7mm is more like a 8mm. Someone on CN measured it to be 7.8mm. Some may experience kidney beaning but that can be easily corrected. All of the UWANs have twist-up eyecups which help with eye placement. The only challenging UWAN EP is the 28mm monster. You either love it or hate it. The eye cup is more like a face cup. If your face has the wrong geometry, it will be very uncomfortable.

I Agree 100%. The 28 just happens to fit me nicely. I haven't looked through the Celestron, Meade, or ES models but I would imagine from all the positive reviews that the Uwans would compare favorably. William optics have the 28 and 16 on sale on their wesite and they are considerably cheaper then the Orion versions on Orions website.

I have a 28UWAN and it is one of 2 eyepieces I use the most with my C8. 12T4 is the other. I was lucky because pictures you see on the web do NOT do any justice for the size of the eye cup. About as big around as a normal straight (coffee cup) bottom. It fit my face just fine once I learned where the eyeplacemet (angle) should be. I would highly recommend one, the view is excellent.

I have the set of UWAN's and have no problem with blackouts. I sold off my Naglers due to blackout problems. That's just me though. Others don't seem to have problems with Naglers. The 28mm works fine for me,great for DSO's. The 7mm is my planetary eyepiece. In the UK the 4mm is usually a little too much although on odd occasions it does indeed provide good views.

I have always loved these eyepieces. Still do. Only shame was that no further focal lengths appeared. Now that Orion is selling 'em, maybe they can convince the manufacturer to expand the line. As far as eye placement? Not that bad. Bit of learning like with any wide AFOV eyepiece...the nice eyecup helps. My original thoughts from some years ago:

what's curious is .. the published field stop diam. of the 7UWAN is close to that of the 16UWAN but, they both claim 82deg AFOV. How does that work??

No, For about a year now I've been trying my hand at AP and using my 80mm as a guide scope. Viewing has only been with my C8. Come to think of it I don't think my 80mm has even seen the 12T4 yet. I think I may need to do something about that. Your question is a good one. It may be awhile since IDA clouds heading my way.

Sorry I took a tangent off the main topic. There are a lot of unanswered questions when you're this new to something. I suppose the real answer, at least for me, will be what I see through my first Nagler when I get it on my little 80. Thanks for your courteous reply anyway.
BTW - what does IDA stand for?

IDA = Hurricane in the gulf......
You could check the review section for CN for 80mm's. You can learn alot because they also usually talk about eyepieces. I would imagine the 12T4 would be good for this as a medium power eyepiece.
