Had a chance two nights ago to spend some time with the Orion 90 observing the moon. Tested the scope with a Hyperion 8-24 Zoom and a 9mm University H.D. Abbe Othroscopic.
Great Views and no CA issues for such an inexpensive scope. Had a great time checking out mountain ranges, crater walls, rilles, microcraters, all of the Apollo landing sites and the marbling effect of interplanetary dust fluxes on the lunar surface.

Just got my Orion 90mm achro delivered at my door. Initial impression is that for $95 it is a very good deal. There are some minor cosmetic paint issues (the paint on the dew shield is not even on the edges and where the dew cap is placed the cap has scratched the paint) and the dew shield is also loose (if you try to remove the dew cap the dew shield comes off ), but that should be easily fixed. As for the focuser it is OK but not great (but I didn't expect a FeatherTouch either!)
Now the view... a quick view of a pine tree 200ft away showed very nicely with the 25mm Sirius Plossl. The view with the 10mm was good too but was a little harder to get the focus to snap. I hope to try it out tonight for some astronomical viewing
Overall if you need a starter scope or a 2nd (or 3rd,...) for public views you can't go wrong with this scope

I just received today the Skywatcher version of this scope with the alt-azimuth mount. Total cost with shipping was $197. I figure it is a great scope for my kids to be using while I'm out with my larger refractor.
But I don't think you can beat the price for everything you get with it. I'm anxious for some clear nights so I can test the optics.

Mine arrived yesterday too!
I heard the UPS truck roll up and met the driver at the sidewalk as he was walking up SWINGING the box by one of the two wrapping bands. I said "Hey be careful that's a telescope!" to which he replied..... "That's OK we ship these things all the time". At that point I figured there was no point arguing with his superior logic and submissively took possession of my new purchase. The box as delivered by UPS was crushed, partially opened and had puncture holes in it. As I was walking back into the house with tattered box in hand I said a prayer that must have resonated with the proper Gods because the scope was unscathed.
Upon opening the box I was struck by the size of the scope. It is much larger than I thought it would be (relative newbie here). The fit and finish is IMO superb (for a $95 scope). I was also very pleased by all the accessories that were included, everything that is needed to start observing right away except for a mount.
My only mount is an older Super Polaris that has only ever held my SP-C6 reflector and does not have a dove tail saddle. Unfortunately the rings that came with the the Orion scope could not be used with the existing bolts on the mount that fasten the rings for my reflector. My heart sank quickly thinking that I would have to wait to try it on my mount until I can find the proper bolts. Then I realised that I could use the bolts that fasten the dove tail plate to the rings on the new scope. I was in business!
By the time I got it on my mount it was kinda late AND cloudy so I could not give it a test. Maybe tonight.
All in all I can not believe that Orion could sell this scope for $95..... freakin' $95!!! If this scope performs as well as my Orion ST80 I will be very happy and for sure convinced that I got one sweet deal!

They are now "out of stock." (If I were a scope retailer I'd get a clue and raise the price, but apparently we can profit off of their ignorance to this fact, so I won't complain )

Had first light with my new scope this morning. It was hazy and cloudy, seeing sucked and it was just starting to get light, but got some pretty decent views of the Moon. I only used the eyepieces that came with it, the 25MM and 10MM Plossils. This scope definitely out performs my ST80 which is all that I was hoping for. I was pleasantly surprised by the focuser. It works just fine.
I have this mounted on my Super Polaris mount and it is extremely solid. Vibration when the mount is tapped is negligable and when the scope is tapped it settles down in a second or less. Also better than I was hoping for.
The finder leaves a lot to be desired so that is the only thing that I am disappointed with.
Overall this scope is a killer deal for $95. I plan to use this as a quick G&G for short backyard observing sessions. I have extreme light polution and many houses and trees blocking my views. So I didn't want to spend a lot of money on a quick G&G. And as I stated I was hoping to get a scope that at least performs as good as or better than my ST80 that provides a bit more magnification.
I can't wait to do a side by side with my Celestron 6" F/5 reflector!

Mine is due to be delivered today. It's been cloudy and raining for a week, I guess I've just guaranteed a least another week of clouds and rain?
Still excited about this deal from the other posts.

Am excited to hear your first (and second) light tales on this scope. The reason is that I want to have a backup plan should my Mak-to-ED80 scheme prove unworkable and I need to compromise somewhat on my refractor choice. I'd like to know how good this one is on planets (contrast, ability to manage atmosphere, and magnification tolerance) relative to the ED80. If it's at least almost as good as the ED80 then it would be a worthy emergency compromise scope. Since I'm not planning to buy any 2" eyepieces in the immediate future, my potential FOV would only be reduced by a third by going for the 90...
(update 11/16) UH-OH. The product no longer shows up in the general online catalog of refractors. This after a somewhat extended out-of-stock period after being available at a steal price. I'm scared that it may have gotten hit by the ugly "D" word. If so, will there be another fairly cheap 80-100mm f/10ish achro OTA package that comes along, or does this represent the end of an era?

Hey Karl, regarding your update, I wondered the same thing. I had my 90mm on lay-a-way (sucks only working 4 days a week, but I can't complain too much - I'm still employed!), but after noticing that it was "out of stock" (even though Orion SAYS they "hold" lay-a-way for you), at payday my wife and I managed to scrape together the money to pay it off. Well, I waited... and waited... and - WHEW! It shipped! Due to arrive on Friday.
Which of course means it will be cloudy for another two weeks after that...
In any case, I do wonder if this is an item that Orion has decided not to keep around - that would be a shame. It's a really great deal, and I hope they get more in stock soon so you can pick one up.

If they decide to discontinue it you can get the Skywatcher 90mm f/10.1 achro. I picked up one for my kids. It came with an altazimuth mount a barlow, several eyepieces, star diagonal -- for $197 shipped.

Got mine today - I haven't had a chance to look at a dark sky with it yet, but my initial impressions overall are, "Nice scope!" I was able to look terrestially about 1/4 mile away, and focus seemed sharp, and objects snapped nicely into focus for me, both with the 25mm and 10mm Plossls that came with it. The only time I had trouble was when I put my barlow in the focuser ahead of my star diagonal - but that's also about 270x too. Perhaps a bit unfair to push it well beyond it's intended limits and then say, "I had trouble."
Anyway, naturally the sky is cloudy tonight. Hopefully I can peer between the clouds in a few minutes and see if I can nab Jupiter, but I"m not optimistic. I'm "supposed" to have better skies tomorrow... here's hoping!
Incidentally, I emailed Orion about this scope to see if they are planning on bringing in more and keeping it as a stock item - that was over 24 hours ago now, and no response. I'll advise how they respond, if they get back to me about it.
