31Nagler or 35 Pan new
      #3433151 - 11/06/09 03:30 PM

Cost not an issue and you would be using it in a 15 f5 scope what would you buy? 31 Nagler or 35 Pan?

I have a 16" F4.5. I have a 31 Nagler on loan, & own the 35Pan. At first I was a little overwhelmed with the view thru the 31 Nagler; but as I use it, I find it rather constricting to then view thru the 35Pan.

I will say however, the 35Pan is an exceptional eyepiece.

This is a very difficult question.

I have recently moved from my 31mm Nagler to a 41mm Panoptic in my C14 because I felt that the lower magnification of the 41mm would help suppress the coma in the telescope.

Since, I have gone to Panoptics for the C14 down to 19mm, and beyond that, I use Naglers becuase at that point, I can tolerate the coma much better.

The 31mm Nagler has a wider true field than the 35mm Panoptic, and as a result, you are seein an area of the field that has more comatic abberation present.

The 35mm is cutting off that area of extreme coma, so the field is bit smaller, but almost just as importantly, the coma visible at the field stop is less magnified, so the comatic blur is a bit tighter.

Now, in side by side comparisons between the 31mm Nagler and the 35mm Pan in a scope that is coma free and has a flat field, both of these eyepieces will provide literal pinpoints at the field stop. Neither is better than the other in terms of off axis sharpness at f/8. I expect that they would be similar at f/5 in a flat field coma free telesope, though I think at f/5.4 I can ses some astigmatism in the 31mm when uses in my TV 101, but it is very possible that it is coming from the scope itself.

Anyway, if you think coma may be an issue, it MIGHT be that the 35mm Pan is a better choice. If you are not sensitive to coma, then the 31mm Nagler is perhaps the greatest long focal lenght eyepiece availble (in my own opinion anyway).

So, to answer your question, if it were me, I would probably go with the 35mm Pan. Since getting the 41mm Pan, I no longer use the 31mm in my C14, but I hardly ever take it out of my 6" f/8 refractor. OMG it is magnificent in that scope.

Regards.

With Dobs it's all about getting the largest TFOV possible. In that respect, the 31mm Nagler delivers. I use one regularly and it's one of my favorites. It's very comfortable to use. Great performer, too. I'd suggest a Parracor though. Good luck!

My thoughts: having owned both (I kept the 31T5):

1) If coma is an issue, get thee a Paracorr...
2) If coma bothers you, it is going to bother you about the same with EITHER the 31T5 or the 35Pan anways
3) Just get the 31T5, you know you want it...

Note: the above experiences were in my 10" f4.7 Newt... I never compared the 31T5 and the 35Pan in my 8" f4.0 Newt, or my 11" C11... For those scopes, I've only had the 31T5... which is NEVER going away... it is a truly awesome EP!

John,
The 35 Panoptic has a 38.7mm Field Stop giving a 1900 mm scope about
1.17 degree FOV, the 21 Ethos has a 36.2 Field Stop giving a 1.09 FOV !!!

magnification difference: 54X for the 35 Pan & 90X for the 21 Ethos and almost the same FOV.

sorry for the wrench, I had too...

Hi John
What would the exit pupil be.Would I loose to much when I use a O-III filter?

You still have a 4 mm exit pupil, and the darker background sky from the increased magnification would help a lot.

The 31T5 is an awesome ep in my 20" f/5. I don't need a parracor either.

Yep I'm Going to order the 31 Nagler now and the 13 Ethos. The Ethos was a no brainer for me. I had a full night at a dark sky mag 7+ That sealed it for me and the 13 ethos.

Ah, but when you use the Paracorr, you RAISE the magnification, so the reality is that the TRUE field in the 31mm Nagler is about the same as when using the 35mm Pan, and maybe even a bit smaller.

Always a tradeoff..
