I figure this Ebay ad deserves its own post
Quantum 8
Wow! I think this is really a Quantum 8. It looks to be modified, but I have looked it over closely and I am convinced. I know that I sure wish I knew an elderly couple who wanted to sell me one of these.
Then, to go along with it..
Schaefer AT-8
Both start out at $1,800. My prediction is the scope goes for 4-6x $1800 and the mount goes for $1800 +/- $400.
Now, the question is...What is that main scope in the observatory.

Weren't only a handful (single digits?) of these made?
The Shaefer would be more common, of course.

I used to be huge into Quantums. I have fully restored 2 4's and a 6. I thought they made six 8" versions, but I am not sure. Markus Ludes had one, so he may chime in here.

Yes, I already asked him about that scope. Seems like a nice guy.

May be off topic now but isn't the Schaefer that is open for bidding here. This one appears to be a little high for a starting bid. The mount appears pre 1980 as it has no casting of Schaefer's name on the dec. housing. I've been told there were only about 150+ 8's built I think they are very sturdy and old school!

Has anyone ever converted one of those Schaefer mounts to goto? I so suck at starhopping ...

Trainsktg would know. His Dad was involved with this company. I haven't seen Keith in a while. I hope all is well with him. Bill

I was surprised at the price that went for, but what do I know???
Last I spoke to Keith he was on a special project in the desert living out of a 18' 1985 Kit Road Ranger Travel trailer. Working 70 hrs. Long time out of touch. He expected this would continue until about March 2010.

Chuck I know someone who use to work at Bill Schaefer's it's who I bought my Schaefer 8 from. My understanding is he is converting a Schaefer 12 to goto he does a conversion to a Losmandy drive system. Biggest hurdle is probably the tangent arm in dec. If you are interested send me a pm I will let him know or look up Bill Schaefer Project on the web and ask.
