15x70 binoculars new
      #3428160 - 11/03/09 08:14 PM

Hi,
I am thinking of purchasing a pair of 15x70 bino's for astronomy use and was wondering if anybody knew if there were any differences between Oberwerks 15x70 ultra,Garrett Optical 15x70 signatures or Orion 15x 70 Resolux..is one better than the other?? or is there something better?

They are basically the same the item. Small differences, say like threaded ocular to accept filters...I just got the GO SS and they are wonderful.

Best to choose the best price matched to the right vendor for customer service. Look for free includes (tripod adapter) and cheaper shipping rates.

You won't be disappointed!

Having dealt with Zach Garrett, I can't say enough good things. What a wonderful experience.

Do you need eyeglasses? If so is the eye relief enough? Because I ware eye glasses.

Steven, welcome to Binoculars! I noticed you haven't got an answer yet about the eye relief of the 15x70 Ultra type binoculars.

For eyeglass wearers, the useable eye relief is only about 10mm which is really not recommended. 15mm would give a greater chance of seeing the entire field of view with glasses. The 10.5x70 and 15x85 of the series have much better eye relief for glasses wearers.

Of course, some eyeglass wearers may be able to use them without problems depending on eyeglass type and individual facial features.

I know they wouldn't work with my eyeglasses!

If you can't try a pair first, make sure the vendor has a good return policy.

They are all thesame IMO and are know as the Kunming Optical BA Series 8 binoculars. I have mine from Teleskope Service and there he is called the TS Marine.

Until recently, I have rarely used my eyeglasses with my binoculars. But I find that it's probably best to do so. So I have been "transitioning." I had no problem at all with my GO SS 15x70 a little over a week ago. However, this is just a personal report without any specifics as to why I had no problems.

Now i come to think of it : I have used my TS Marine with my eyeglasses and with the eyecups folded down i had no trouble to see the entire field to the edge.
Eyerelief is excellent to me. But that just me and may not work for everyone.
My Obie 10x60(Helions Quantum) has too much eyerelief even with eyeglasses on it keeps blacking out if my eyeposition if just a bit off line...

I am sorry I didn't respond right away.
It is true that the eye relief is rather close. I do not wear glasses so haven't had any issues.

My wife has tried to use these and to get proper distance, all she had to do was fold down the eye cups.

I highly recommend these.

Thanks for all the answers they help! I think I will buy a pair of these, the eye relief will probably will work for me?! But I need to sell a pair of Pentax 8x43 DCF SP first, (know anybody interested)? excellent pair but a little too small for astronomy.Oh ya the amazon link is a good deal but I want a higher Quality pair I was told that the bridge flexes causing unbalanced focus in each eye.

I bought a pair of 15x70 signatures last year, but had to return them do to short eye relief. I hated to do it because everything else about these were very fine. The field of view that I got with these while wearing glasses was about the same as what I see in my 20x80s, only smaller. So I couldn't justify keeping them. However, I would still recommend them for the unbespectacled --Tad

Oh I See (haha), I am a little worried about the eye relief on the signatures. Does anybody know how good these are "GarrettŪ Gemini 15x70 WP-IF/CF Binoculars"they are cheaper only 229.95?? Did a search but could not find anything on them.

I'm expecting my GO SS 10.5 x 70's next week. I understand these have extra eye relief (I do wear glasses). Since this will be my very first binocular purchase, I don't know what to expect. I already have a Manfrotto photographic tripod and head combo - which I hope will be satisfactory for use with my new toy. I specifically bought them for my xmas trip, so I am quite excited to use them in dark rural AL.

Under dark skies you'll be very happy with the 10.5 x 70's. When I used them at NEAF I was impressed by the generous eye relief. A very easy, comfortable pair of binoculars to use. Enjoy.

Peter,
What happens with the 10.5x70 if you move your eye to close, do you experience black outs then?

Freddy,

For mounted observation I rarely have a problem with binocular with generous eye eye relief. In fact, sometimes I prefer to keep my eyes just slightly back from the EP. Being able to see the full FOV without jamming the EPs against my eye socket feels more relaxing. I enjoy using my mounted 20X80 LW binos that way very much.

Didn't Orion once have a 15 x 70 Megaview available?

Orion used to carry a 15X70 Little Giant/II. It was made in Japan. Very light weight ~ 2 lb 14 oz, priced over $250. Eye relief was very tight.(8 mm) Mechanical construction was typical Japanese: solid. IIRC, it had a 5 yr warranty. Orion also had 11X70 & 20X70s in that series. Since many Chinese made 15X70 are available today priced from $60 and up very few see the need for the Japanese 15X70 anymore.
